In order to remove the oil pump, begin by removing the sump, and then unscrew the securing bolts in order to loosen the oil baffle to the cylinder block. Then loosen and remove the three mounting bolts to dissolve the oil pump out of the dowels in the crankcase, detach the oil pump drive sprocket out of the chain, and remove the oil pump and the oil pick-up pipe out of the engine, with the help of a screwdriver to maintain the tensioner in its non-attached position as needed. When wished, the flange bolts can then be unscrewed to release the suction pipe of the oil pump and the O-ring seal, whereupon fresh O-ring will be required to renew upon refitting should the oil pick-up pipe be detached. Clean the pump and check the gear teeth or rotors with regard to any damage or wear and replace the oil pump when necessary. To change the sprocket in the oil pump, unscrew the screw and slide off the sprocket which can only be installed in a single position. Application Starts with filling the pump with oil by pouring into the pick-up pipe aperture and then turning the driveshaft and then replace the cover to the oil pump and tighten the bolts. When the drive chain, crankshaft sprocker, and tensioner have been disassembled, do not replace them until the oil pump is attached to the cylinder block, but use a screwdriver to push the tensioner against the spring and thus allow slack in the chain to fit in the oil pump. Connect the oil pump sprocket with the drive chain, position the oil pump on the dowels and then tighten the three mounting bolts to the desired torque. Install the drive chain, tensioner, and crankshaft sprocket back in, taking the reverse procedure, followed by re-installing the oil baffle, and tightening the securing bolts, before lastly re-installing the sump. In the case of drive chain and sprockers, VAG sealant will be needed to seal the crankshaft oil seal housing when it is refitted and it is recommended to fit a new crankshaft oil seal. To dismount the oil pump sprocket, unscrew the securing bolt, extract the sprocket off of the shaft of the pump and unhook the sprocket off of the drive chain. To disassemble the chain, loosen the timing belt, unbolt the crankshaft oil seal housing on the cylinder block, loosen the chain tensioner and disconnect the chain to the crankshaft sprocket. An oil pump drive sprocket is a press-fit on the crankshaft that might need consulting an Audi dealer in case of wearing or damages. Test the chain, wear, and damage, where too much lateral play or noises means wear, and it is prudent to replace the chain in case the engine is to be overhauled. Inspect the sprocket teeth regarding wear which will be slightly concave when it is worn and replace the sprocket where needed. In case the oil pump has been taken out, fit it in front of the chain and sprocket. Install the chain tensioner back on the cylinder block and remember to position the tensioner spring on the proper location and then attach the chain to the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump sprocket to the chain with the use of a screwdriver to allow slackness in joining the two. Turn the oil pump sprocket bolt to the required tightness, install a new crankshaft oil seal to the housing and reinstall the housing. Lastly, where necessary, refit the oil baffle and screw the securing bolts and refit the sump.
