Audi 100 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and inspect the oil pump and sump for 4-cylinder diesel engines on Audi 100?
    A:
To remove the sump, unscrew and take out the large oil pump mounting bolts, then withdraw the pump from the block. With the pump on the bench, unscrew the bolts to detach the suction tube from the oil pump, recovering the O-ring. Next, unscrew the two bolts and lift off the cover. For inspection, clean the components and check for wear and damage. Use a feeler blade to measure the backlash between the gears and compare it with the specified limits, also checking the endfloat of the gears with a straight edge across the end face of the pump; if measurements exceed the limits, replace the pump, otherwise refit the cover and tighten the bolts. When refitting, prime the pump with oil by immersing it in oil and turning the driveshaft, then clean the contact faces, fit the oil pump to the block, insert the mounting bolts, and tighten them to the specified torque. Locate a new O-ring seal on the end of the suction tube, attach the tube to the oil pump, insert the bolts, and tighten them to the specified torque before refitting the sump.
