Audi A3 Oil Pump

The Audi A3 Oil Pump is designed to ensure the engine life is maintained as it pressurizes the oil and passes through each moving component to ensure that heat is dissipated and friction is minimal. A small gear set or trochoid rotor mounted internally in all modern Audi engines is applied to raise the lubricant out of the sump and pass it through the filter and cooler by the Oil Pump and on to bearings, pistons and the camshaft before the excess flows back to the pan. Previous Audi models featured direct-drive components, which run around the crankshaft, whereas later models tend to have a side-mounted gear or chain-driven design, with a few crankcase-mounted designs which pass the motion through a hex-ended shaft. Both Oil Pump styles have equal RPM proportional oil movement, but the placement and the mode of drive vary service points, requiring direct-drive Audi pumps to be pressed close to the crank, chain units to be provided with sprockets needing maintenance, and Audi crankcase pumps to have their thin drive shafts checked to avoid rounding off. All the designs are equipped with a pressure relief valve to ensure that overload does not occur and a switch or sending unit that allows the dashboard light or gauge to alert drivers in case the pressure is below the required specification. Since pressure usually increases approximately ten psi per thousand revolutions, clean pickup screens and correct oil weight are crucial to any A3, so that the Oil Pump is capable of controlling the flow and cooling. Regular checks of gears, housing, and clearance prevent scoring or wear that could starve an Audi powerplant, and ensure smooth power and a lifelong run of the brand with a reliable Oil Pump.

Audi A3 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the components, including the oil pump and balancer shaft housing for Diesel engines on Audi A3?
    A:
The engine should first be adjusted to TDC on No 1 cylinder and then the sump is removed. The second thing to do is to unscrew two bolts fastening the oil pipe on the back of the engine block. With a small screwdriver, downwardly press the tabs to unlock the retaining clips and then the chain/sprocket cover can be removed. Slacken the oil pump drive sprocket retaining bolt with a Trox bit about one turn. Tensioners Release tension in the drive chain by pushing the drive chain tensioner blade with a screwdriver into the tensioner assembly and insert a 3 mm drill bit into the tensioner assembly to hold the blade in place. Take the Trox bolt off, and take the sprocket out of the shaft of the oil pump, and the sprockets out of the chain. Slacken and remove the bolts holding the balance shaft housing and intermediate plate in place gradually and in a uniform manner with designations of the positions in which the bolts were originally fixed, and take off the balancer shaft housing and plate out of the engine block discarding the retaining bolts and replacing the intermediate plate. Unscrew the retaining bolts to take out the drive chain tensioner in the balancer shaft housing. In the event of need, loosen the five bolts and open the oil pump cover and extract the inner and outer rotors of the pump. To inspect, check the drive chain by checking the wear and damage, but remember that the timing belt should come off first then no single part is available that can be dismantled and the balancer shaft and housing should not be dismantled. In case the oil pump is dismantled, clean the parts and verify wear and damage and replace the oil pump in case of need. When the parts can be reused then after fitting the outer and the inner rotors to the pump body with the markings in place then replace the pump cover and tighten the retaining bolts to the required torque. In order to refit it, pour oil into the suction pipe aperture when turning the driveshaft. Install the chain tensioner assembly again, fitting it in the balancer shaft housing, and checking the retaining bolts to the recommended torque and locking the tensioner blade. Place a bead of appropriate sealant on the cylinder block side of the intermediate plate, care should be taken not to make it too thick. Place the intermediate plate on the locating dowels and pass the drive chain through the plate. Install the balancer shaft housing on the cylinder block/intermediate plate, new bolts and fit them in two steps with the recommended torque setting. Make sure that the crankshaft pulley is at TDC, position balancer shaft sprocket according to the locating mark, and secure it by drill bit of 5.0 mm. Attach the drive chain to the balancer shaft sprocket, insert the oil pump sprocket into the drive chain and clamp the new sprocket onto the oil pump shaft, screwing the retaining bolt of the new sprocket to the required torque. Install Decidendi Take away the locking tools, replace the cover back over the drive sprockets and fix them using retaining clips. Lastly, with non-turbocharged models, refit the oil line to the housing and securely tighten the bolts then refit the sump.
