The oil seals are of the PTFE (Teflon) type and are installed dry, without grease or oil, featuring a wider sealing lip and replacing the coil spring type oil seal. For the timing belt end oil seal, if the oil seal housing is removed, VAG sealant (D 176 404 A2, or equivalent) is necessary for resealing. Begin by removing the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. To extract the seal without removing the housing, drill two small holes diagonally, insert self-tapping screws, and pull with pliers. Alternatively, to remove the oil seal with its housing, first remove the sump to ensure a proper seal upon refitting, then unbolt and take out the oil seal housing. On a bench, use a suitable screwdriver to lever the oil seal from the housing, being careful not to damage the seating. Clean the oil seal seating thoroughly, then protect the oil seal lips by winding tape around the crankshaft end. Fit a new oil seal into the housing, ensuring the closed end faces outwards, and press it into position using a socket or tube, taking care not to damage the seal lips. If the oil seal housing was removed, clean old sealant from both the housing and cylinder block, then apply a bead of VAG sealant along the mating face of the oil seal housing, ensuring it is refitted within 5 minutes. Avoid excessive sealant to prevent blockage of the oil pick-up pipe. Refit the oil seal housing carefully, tightening the bolts to the specified torque, then reattach the sump, crankshaft sprocket, and timing belt. For the flywheel/driveplate end oil seal, if the original housing used sealant, VAG sealant will also be needed for resealing. Remove the clutch pressure plate/flywheel/driveplate and sump, then unbolt and remove the oil seal housing with the oil seal. The new oil seal comes pre-fitted to a new housing. Clean the mating face on the cylinder block, then use the supplied fitting tool to prevent damage while locating it over the crankshaft end. If the original housing used sealant, apply a thin bead of VAG sealant to the mating face, ensuring it is refitted within 5 minutes. Carefully fit the oil seal/housing assembly over the crankshaft and tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence to the specified torque. Remove the oil seal protector tool, then reattach the sump and the clutch pressure plate/flywheel/driveplate.
