Audi A4 Oil Pump

The Audi A4 Oil Pump pushes oil under pressure all over the engine to keep bearings, pistons and cams cool and slick, securing power and life. This group of gears, springs and a relief valve is also found around or beside the crankshaft; this is what draws the lubricant past the sump screen, past the filter and into the galleries, which also contain an oil pressure switch or a sending unit to drive the dash light or gauge, etc. Audi employed three crank-driven layouts over the years. Direct drive units coil around the crank nose such that the drive gear engages directly with the shaft; gear drive and chain drive units are mounted off the side and depend on spur gears or a chain and sprocket teeth; crankcase mounted versions rotate on a hex-ended driveshaft that connects the pump to the distributor. Every type of Oil Pump works by the same method, but each has a different way of being rotated; therefore the inspection points are different, on a direct design it is the gear scoring, whereas on crankcase mounts it is the chain stretch or rounded driveshaft hex. Editions of the Audi that are performance oriented have clearances that are looser to run crank flex during high RPM, and therefore a high volume Oil Pump is installed in order to move the fluid required. Oil and filter changes of your Audi are performed on a regular basis to make sure that debris does not grind against the gears in the Oil Pump and that the relief valve is free to move. When Audi A4 works properly, maintaining constant pressure when driving both on a regular basis and in spirited driving, the engine has lubrication it can count on.

Audi A4 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pump for Four-cylinder engines on Audi A4?
    A:
With the 1.8L engine, the first step will be to remove the Oil Pan, then loosen and remove the baffle plate in the bottom of the crankcase. The next step is to take off the bolt that holds the drive sprocket into the oil pump and place the chain and sprocket to the side. Unscrew the mounting bolts of the oil pump and pull off the pump out of the block. In order to check, unscrew the two bolts and remove the cover which contains the pressure relief valve. Wipe the components using the solvent and check the wear or breakage of parts; in case of a break extensive part of the oil pump is recommended to be replaced. To install, clean the contact face, fit the cover to the oil pump and screw the bolts to the correct torque. Get the pump primed with oil by pouring it into the pick-up tube aperture as the driveshaft is turned. Wipe the oil pump and block, fit the oil pump, fit the mounting bolts and tighten them to desired torque, making sure that the dowel pins are in their right place. Install a new O-ring seal in the end of the pick-up tube, place the tube in the oil pump, connect the bolts, and screw them to the required torque. Install the rest of the parts in the reverse order, pour the oil, start the engine, and verify the presence of oil pressure and leakages, and repeat the engine oil level verification. In the case of 2.0L engine turn the engine to TDC compression of cylinder no. 1, undo the fasteners attaching the chain guard and remove the guard. As the crankshaft is being secured, loosen the pump assembly sprocket bolt, and press the chain tensioner with a taped screwdriver until a small Allen wrench or drill bit can be slipped into it. Disassemble the oil pump sprocket, the oil baffle, and removal of the assembly mounting bolts with the removal being done at the ends to the middle. Should wear be observed then the entire oil pump/balance shaft assembly should be changed. To install, use the opposite of the removal process, substituting the balance shaft assembly mounting bolts with others and ensuring that the assembly is installed using a new gasket and O-ring seal. Lastly pour oil, turn on the engine, observe oil pressure and leakage and re observe the level of engine oil.
  • Q: How to remove and install the 3.0L and 3.2L engine oil pumps for V6 engines on Audi A4?
    A:
The 3.0L engine oil pump can be removed by simply removing the Oil Pan, and rotating the engine to TDC, where the Camshafts and crankshafts are and lobes of the no. 3 camshafts are facing up. Then take off the bolts that hold the oil tubes and the baffle mounting bolts. Separate the drive gear by loosening its bolt, then loosen the washer known as the diamond disc and work out the sprocket of the pump before unscrewing the two mounting bolts and nuts of the pump. The assembly can be removed by fitting bolts in two threaded holes and then pulling it down off the studs with a slide-hammer. In case of any damage or wear noticed, one should remove the whole assembly of the oil pump and the drive chain and the sprockets. Installation To fit, simply reverse the order that it was installed, with a new gasket and O-ring seal, a new diamond disc washer and drive gear bolt. Turn the balance shaft to receive a pin to hold onto, install the "diamond disc" and drive gear back onto the oil pump sprocket and then tighten the bolt and then remove a pin. In the case of the 3.2L engine, the oil pump can be removed by first lifting off the lower oil pan followed by the oil pump mounting bolts and the oil pump off the oil pump driveshaft and away. In case of damage or wear, then the entire oil pump assembly is advised to be replaced. The mating surfaces must be clean before fixing the assembly (clean the oil pump housing and the upper oil pan section). On the new O-rings, apply the oil pump to the driveshaft and screw on the mounting bolts, and replace the rest of the parts back in reverse order. Lastly, Add oil and coolant (unless hoses were disconnected), turn on the engine, check on oil pressure and leakages, and then again check on engine oil level.
