- Q: What is the function and removal process of an intercooler on Audi A3?A:The turbo models only have an intercooler which acts as an air radiator to cool pressurized, inbound air before it enters the engine. The expansion is attained when the inlet air is compressed by the turbocharger, and cooling down the air enables an increase in the effective volume to be induced into the engine, leading to higher engine power. The air that is pushed out of the turbocharger is directed into the bottom of the intercooler which is situated in the front of the car along the airflow. The hot air passes through the intercooler where it is cooled by the air that is flowing over the fins and directed into the throttle housing. To be removed the intercooler is placed in front of the radiator on the lock carrier, necessitating the radiator to be taken off in order to access it. This includes relocating the lock carrier to its Service position, opening air ducts of inlet and outlet elbows, unscrewing the screws that hold air conditioning condenser, and unscrewing of the screws holding the intercooler. Caution should be observed not to break or scratch the cooling fins in the process and the mounting rubber, and intercooler must be checked on the possibility of any damage or crack in the air hoses. Unscrew the oil feed and coolant feed lines, lift the vehicle and get rid of the air conditioning compressor without removing the refrigerant hoses. Unscrew the air inlet and outlet ducts, unscrew the turbocharger support bracket, and unscrew the oil return line off the oil pan and be sure to spill any remaining oil. On 2.0L models, the same steps are used with the addition of the exhaust manifold heat shield and PCV fresh air inlet hose being removed, as well as multiple line banjo bolts.
