Audi Fuel Injector Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps and considerations for maintaining and replacing fuel injectors on Audi A3?
    A:
Injectors wear out through experience, and must be reconditioned or renewed after about 60,000 miles, and correctly tested, overhauled and adjusted by an expert. When removing, caution is required to ensure that no dirt gets into the injectors or the fuel pipes, neither should the injectors be dropped or hand-lugged about. In the case of SOHC engines, the upper timing belt cover and the camshaft cover have to be removed and then the rocker arm has to be adjusted in order to release the tension on the injector plunger spring and then step by step the rocker shaft retaining bolts and the rocker shaft are to be removed. The bolt fixing block would be unscrewed and the wiring connector would be pried off. The injector is normally removed with a slide hammer and in case of unavailability then a homemade version can be made. Unscrewing the retaining nuts on the back of the head can allow the injector wiring loom to be taken out. In the case of DOHC engines, the same steps are taken, that is, removing the upper timing belt cover, camshaft cover, adjusting the rocker arm and removing the injector with the help of a slide hammer. New O-rings, heat insulation washers, and clips have to be employed during the refitting of SOHC engines, and the O-rings have to be installed, without any twisting. The injector should be fitted properly and fixed with the clamping bolt and then the rocker shaft assembly bolts should be tightened in particular steps. When a injector has been replaced, then the adjust screw and locknut is also required as well as injector wiring plug is reconnected. In the case of DOHC engines, the same attention to the O-rings and heat insulation washers should be used, and when screwing the mounting bolts, the injector should be completely inserted. Rocker shaft assembly is hereafter re-assembled and in case an injector has been replaced, adjustment process with DTI gauge will be required. Lastly, the camshaft cover and upper timing belt cover are once again fitted, and the engine is started to make sure that it functions properly.
  • Q: How to remove and replace fuel injectors and fuel rails on Audi A4?
    A:
First of all, defuel the system and remove the cable to the negative battery terminal. On 1.8L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 engines, disassemble the engine cover, wrap a rag around the fitting of the fuel supply line, and disconnect it, depending on the model year, as the fuel systems were different. Disconnect the electrical connector on four-cylinder models to the CMP sensor and the fuel injectors and on V6 models to the intake manifold change-over valve and fuel injectors. Unscrew the fuel rail mounting screwdriver, and hold the fuel rail on one hand and pull the injectors out with the other. Take off and dispose old injector O-rings, and replace even when only one injector was removed. To install, apply clean engine oil to new O-rings, install injectors in the fuel rail and hold them retainer clips. Fit the assemblies of the fuel rails onto the intake manifold, screw the fittings, and rejoin the battery. Switch on the fuel pump to pressurize and test leakages. To do it to 2.0L four-cylinder models, remove the engine cover, unscrew the intake duct and deconnect the fuel supply line fitting and plugging the open lines. Unscrew all electrical connectors and hoses at the intake manifold, loosen clamped brackets that hold coolant pipes, and, where required, empty coolant to loosen up radiator hose. Disconnect the intake manifold support bracket and the fuel pressure sensor, remove the dipstick and high-pressure fuel line fittings. Take out the intake manifold and the fuel rail as one unit, getting rid of the old gasket. To withdraw fuel injectors disengage radial compensator tabs and extract injector checking radial compensator and support ring condition. Take out the old sealing rings and check the uppermost spacer ring. Dismantle the intake manifold, (as required), withdrawing EVAP line fixtures, fuel line clamping, and intake flap motor. The process of reassembly goes in reverse of the disassembly. To assemble injectors again clean injector grooves, apply new Teflon seals with special tools or a socket assembly, apply spacer ring and O-ring. Fit injectors into the cylinder head making sure that they are completely installed. Replace the gasket on the intake manifold, then screw the manifold and fuel rail assembly in place, making sure that all the fasteners are aligned and tightened. In the case of 3.2L V6, pull up the engine cover and the upper intake manifold, detach the fuel supply line fitting, and pull out the fuel line bracket screws. Unscrew electrical connector on the intake manifold runners position sensor and fuel pressure sensor, then un screw the bottom intake manifold and fuel rails in one piece. Get rid of the old gasket, stuff the holes on the intake port and take off the working area. When injectors are stuck, a special puller may be used or the method described above. Take off the fuel rail retaining bracket fasteners, install all injector seals and install the support ring and radial compensator. Install the injector bores, the fuel injectors, reconnect the fuel rails, and the bottom manifold with a new gasket, and fasten the assembly in a crisscross pattern.
