- Q: How to remove and refit the intake manifold on the front on Audi A3?A:In the case of SOHC, the engine top cover should be removed. In case the flap motor and EGR valve are not built in with the intake manifold, remove them. Where needed, loosen the heat shield by removing it off the manifold, unscrewing the mounting bolts and taking the intake manifold off the cylinder head, and make sure to salvage and dispose the gasket because one will be needed to fit again. The process of refitting includes undoing the steps of removing the parts and replacing them with new gaskets and O-rings of the manifold, EGA pipe, and manifold flap assembly as well as tightening the mounting bolts up to the intended torque. In the case of DOHC engines, a standard intake manifold is at the top down of the rear of the cylinder head, where in the case of engine code BMN there is a vacuum operated valve that controls two inner channels to enhance the swirl of air. The first step is to remove the engine top cover, then remove the flap motor/housing and EGA valve. When the engine code is BMN, the swirl control vacuum unit is disconnected and unbolted to the left-hand end of the intake manifold, and then, the support bracket(s) and cable holder are disconnected. Loosen mounting bolts and then remove intake manifold off the cylinder head, salvage the gasket and remove the old one but a new one should be used to install again. The refitting is similar to the steps of removing the process and it needs new gaskets and O-rings, the mounting bolts are tightened to the recommended torque.

Dry out the engine coolant partially and take away the coolant expansion tank. Unplug the electrical connector into the throttle body. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors of throttle valve control module and the intake air temperature sensor. Disassemble the throttle body hose of the upper intercooler. Discharged fuel system pressure and took off the fuel rail and injectors. Take out the upper coolant pipe of the engine and the throttle body coolant hoses, the oil dipstick and the dipstick tube. Label and disconnect any unwanted vacuum lines or electrical wiring which might obstruct the removal of the intake manifold. Take out the lower support brace of the intake manifold. Take a scraper to wipe away any old gasket material and sealant on the manifold and the cylinder head, then clean the surfaces to be mated by sprinkling them with brake system cleaner. In case the gasket started leaking, then have the manifold checked at a machine shop in the automotive industry and resurfaced in case of warpage. Install a new gasket, attach the manifold on the head and install the nuts/bolts. Install the nuts/bolts in three or four equal steps with the torque with the center done first and then extend towards the ends so that the manifold is not warped. Install the other components opposite to the manner of their removal. Check the coolant and add some, in case it should be raised to the right level. Start the engine and ensure that there are no coolant and vacuum leakages. Lastly, test drive the car and ensure that all accessories are functioning well such as the cruise control system.
