- Q: How to remove and inspect the gearbox and flywheel/driveplate for 5-cylinder petrol engines on Audi 100?A:To remove the gearbox on manual models, detach the gearbox and clutch, while for automatic transmission models, remove the automatic transmission. The flywheel/driveplate bolts are offset for correct fitment; unscrew them while holding the flywheel/driveplate stationary, using a screwdriver or a homemade holding tool. Lift the flywheel/driveplate from the crankshaft, noting the location of any shim and spacer if removing a driveplate. Inspect the flywheel/driveplate for wear and damage, particularly the starter ring gear for excessive tooth wear; if damaged, the complete driveplate must be replaced, although the flywheel ring gear can be renewed separately by an Audi dealer. If the clutch friction face shows discoloration or excessive scoring, regrinding may be possible, but should also be handled by an Audi dealer. A renewed flywheel/driveplate will only have a TDC mark, necessitating the addition of an ignition timing mark according to specified measurements. Check the spigot needle bearing in the crankshaft for wear; if excessive wear is evident or if it has run dry, replace it by extracting the circlip and using a bearing removal puller. Refitting involves reversing the removal process, ensuring to coat the threads of new bolts with locking fluid and tightening them to the specified torque. If fitting a replacement driveplate, check and adjust its position as needed, ensuring the distance from the rear face of the block to the torque converter mounting face is between 21.3 to 22.9 mm, using spacers if necessary, with the raised pip on the outer shim facing the torque converter.
- Q: How to remove and inspect the gearbox and flywheel for 2.0 litre DOHC petrol engines on Audi A3?A:In order to strip the gearbox in the manual models detach the gearbox and the clutch whereas in the automatic transmission models, detach the automatic transmission. Their model with manual transmission has a dual-mass flywheel; the flywheel should be aligned with the crankshaft, then flywheel must be turned to align the bolts with the holes, undo the locking bolts and then take off the flywheel by using a tool to lock it in place. Cast off the old bolts and fit new ones, do not use pneumatic tools as it will get damaged. In the case of automatic transmission, position the marks on the driveplate and crankshaft, unscrew the bolts, and disalign the driveplate using a locking tool and discard the old ones. Also, take the shim out in the back of the driveplate. Check the flywheel and driveplate wear and damage, especially with starter ring gear being overly worn, which will require replacement in its entirety should it be so. It is recommended that there should be no cracks on the drive surface; otherwise, there is a possibility that it has to be renewed. Check warpage, a straight-edge and feeler gauge are used, the warpage should not be more than 0.40 mm to renew. When evaluating the presence of free rotational movement, note the movement of the drive surface in each direction and make sure that the total movement is not in excess of 10.0 mm, otherwise renewal might be required. To assure total rotation, install bolts at the holes in the clutch pressure plate, to measure the motion of the drive surface which should not exceed 44.00 mm. Lateral movement should not exceed 2.0 mm; this may be verified by pushing down on both sides of the drive surface and seeing how far the marks are different. Refitting is a process of undoing the removal process and replacing it with the new bolts and tightening them to the designated torque.
