It gains access to the clutch by removing the transmission. Indicate the flywheel and the clutch cover with respect to one another. Keep the flywheel still and unscrew the bolts of the clutch cover one after the other in diagonal order, with an Allen key. When the bolts have been unscrewed two or three turns, be careful that the cover does not clamp on the dowel pins, and that you may need to relax the cover with a screwdriver. After taking out all the bolts, loosen the flywheel by lifting off the cover and friction disc of the clutch. Wipe the cover, disc, and the flywheel, ensuring that one does not inhale asbestos dust. Check the fingers of the diaphragm spring wear, or scoring, more than 0.3 mm, change of cover assembly. Examine the pressure plate in terms of scoring, cracking, and discoloration; light scoring is no problem, but extreme scoring demands a new cover assembly. Checks on the friction disc linings; wear, cracking, and contamination with oil or grease, and change the disc as the linings are worn out to the rivets or nearly there. Separately check the flywheel friction surface as to scoring, cracking, and overheating discoloration; in the latter case, there is a possibility of remedying the flywheel by machining, in the former case, it should be replaced. Clean and grease free parts should be reassembled, a small portion of high melting point grease should be put on the splines of the friction disc hub. Protective grease can be applied on new pressure plates and clutch covers and the grease should only be removed outside of the friction disc lining contact area to prevent reducing the service life of the clutch. Grinding: To reassemble the gearbox, find the friction disc of the flywheel by the raised and torsion spring side of the hub and so that the centralising tool is not needed to hold the disc stationary a centralising tool can be used. Find the clutch cover on the disc and place it over the location dowels with already made marks if fitting back the original one. Install the bolts so tight with the finger to maintain the position of the cover. Friction disc- Have the friction disc centred so that the transmission input shaft is correctly aligned with the spigot bearing in the crankshaft, with either a proprietary tool or with a wooden mandrel shaped to fit into the friction disc and flywheel spigot bearing. Tighten the bolts that secure the clutch cover in a diagonal manner and in increasing order until the desired torque level is reached and the centralising tool is removed. Test the release bearing in the front of the transmission, replacing where necessary, and refix the transmission.

All the models with manual transaxle have a single dry plate, diaphragm spring type clutch, with a splined hub, to enable the clutch disc to slide on the splines of the input shaft of the transaxle. The pressure plate is in direct contact with the clutch, by the diaphragm spring pressure in the pressure plate. The clutch release system is hydraulically controlled and consists of the clutch pedal, the clutch master cylinder, the clutch release cylinder and the hydraulic line between the two cylinders. Upon the release of the clutch by pressing the clutch pedal, the master cylinder causes movement to be searched to the release cylinder causing the clutch release lever to be activated. As the lever pivot involves the release bearing, the fingers of the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate assembly, and the clutch plate is released. Clutch terms may differ with the slave cylinder being known as the clutch release cylinder, the driven plate being known as the clutch plate or disc, the pressure plate assembly being known as the clutch cover and the clutch release bearing being known as the throw-out bearing. Besides changing visibly damaged parts, the initial test to identify the clutch system failure involves paying attention to the spin down time in engine at idle speed with transaxle in Neutral, disengaging the clutch, and shifting into Reverse without any grinding sound, which would be an indication of the problem with the pressure plate or the clutch disc. To confirm full release of the clutch, the engine is to be running with the parking brake engaged and the clutch pedal approximately 1.5 inches above the floor and switch between 1 st and Reverse gears; the rough movement of the gears indicates a component malfunction. A physical examination of the clutch pedal pivot to be stuck or excessively worn should also be carried out as well as leaks in the hydraulic lines at the master and release cylinders, and bleeding the system (where applicable).
