Injectors wear out through experience, and must be reconditioned or renewed after about 60,000 miles, and correctly tested, overhauled and adjusted by an expert. When removing, caution is required to ensure that no dirt gets into the injectors or the fuel pipes, neither should the injectors be dropped or hand-lugged about. In the case of SOHC engines, the upper timing belt cover and the camshaft cover have to be removed and then the rocker arm has to be adjusted in order to release the tension on the injector plunger spring and then step by step the rocker shaft retaining bolts and the rocker shaft are to be removed. The bolt fixing block would be unscrewed and the wiring connector would be pried off. The injector is normally removed with a slide hammer and in case of unavailability then a homemade version can be made. Unscrewing the retaining nuts on the back of the head can allow the injector wiring loom to be taken out. In the case of DOHC engines, the same steps are taken, that is, removing the upper timing belt cover, camshaft cover, adjusting the rocker arm and removing the injector with the help of a slide hammer. New O-rings, heat insulation washers, and clips have to be employed during the refitting of SOHC engines, and the O-rings have to be installed, without any twisting. The injector should be fitted properly and fixed with the clamping bolt and then the rocker shaft assembly bolts should be tightened in particular steps. When a injector has been replaced, then the adjust screw and locknut is also required as well as injector wiring plug is reconnected. In the case of DOHC engines, the same attention to the O-rings and heat insulation washers should be used, and when screwing the mounting bolts, the injector should be completely inserted. Rocker shaft assembly is hereafter re-assembled and in case an injector has been replaced, adjustment process with DTI gauge will be required. Lastly, the camshaft cover and upper timing belt cover are once again fitted, and the engine is started to make sure that it functions properly.
