The front oil seal can be changed by first removing the
Timing Belt and crankshaft gear. In case an extractor tool is present, it is possible to renew the seal without replacement of the oil pump, however, otherwise it is recommended to install Audi tool 2080 and a guide sleeve. Dip the new seal into engine oil before installation and with the old seal having damaged the crankshaft, place the new seal on the undamaged area. Then re-fit the timing belt and crankshaft gear. When removing the rear oil seal, the first step is to take off the
Flywheel or driveplate. On the one hand, with an extractor tool, the seal may be replaced without unscrewing the housing; on the other hand, the unscrewing of the housing, including the two sump bolts, may be done and the gasket removed. When the sump gasket is broken in this process, the sump will require removal in order to install a new gasket and this should be installed after fitting the housing is completed. Next wring the old seal out of the housing, dip the new seal in engine oil, and pound it into the housing with a block of wood or socket till it is a tight fit, with the closed part of the seal facing outwards. Lastly, install a new gasket into the housing, evenly screw the bolts into the housing in a diagonal pattern and then start to replace the flywheel or the driveplate.
