This procedure is only possible if access to the special Audi/VAG service tool (2069 or 2069A) or a suitable equivalent can be gained. New shock absorber bush mounting plate nuts and a new piston nut will be required on reassembly. If either front shock absorber requires renewal, both should be renewed at the same time to ensure even and consistent handling; never renew shock absorbers individually. Due to the design of the front suspension struts, it is possible to renew the shock absorbers without removing the struts from the vehicle. Park the vehicle on level ground and firmly apply the handbrake. With the vehicle standing on its wheels, open the bonnet and remove the cover from the strut top mounting. Using a suitable marker pen, draw around the shock absorber bush plate to mark its correct fitted location on the strut upper mounting plate to preserve the front wheel camber setting. Slacken and remove the shock absorber piston nut and dished washer, retaining the piston with an Allen key to prevent rotation as the nut is unscrewed; discard the nut and use a new one on reassembly. Slacken and remove the three retaining nuts and washers, then remove the shock absorber bush from the top of the strut upper mounting plate. Turn the steering wheel so that the shock absorber piston is positioned centrally in the strut top mounting plate aperture. To prevent the spring from moving while the shock absorber is removed, wedge it in position by inserting wooden blocks between the spring and body. Disengage the shock absorber piston gaiter from the strut, then slide the locating bush and bump stop off from the piston. Using the special service tool, unscrew the cap nut from the strut base, then carefully lift the shock absorber out of position via the hole in the upper mounting plate. Insert the new shock into position and seat it correctly in the shock absorber base. Screw on the cap nut and tighten it to the specified torque setting. Slide the bump stop and locating bush onto the shock absorber piston, then fully extend the piston. Locate the bush assembly on the end of the piston and engage it with the upper mounting plate studs. Fit the washer and new nut to the shock absorber piston, tightening it to the specified torque setting. Align the shock absorber bush plate with the marks made prior to removal, then fit the washers and new retaining nuts, tightening them to the specified torque. Refit the cover to the upper mounting, ensuring its arrow is pointing towards the wheel. Remove the wooden blocks used to wedge the coil spring in position, then seat the shock absorber piston gaiter correctly back onto the strut base; it is advisable to have the front wheel camber setting checked at the earliest opportunity.
