All self-locking nuts and bolts disturbed on removal must be renewed as a matter of course. Before removing the shock absorber, an idea of its effectiveness can be gained by depressing the rear corner of the car; if the shock absorber is in good condition, the body should rise and then settle in its normal position, while excessive oscillation indicates a defect. To ensure even rear suspension, both rear shock absorbers should be renewed simultaneously. Chock the front roadwheels, jack up the rear of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands before removing the relevant rear roadwheel. Remove the wheel arch liner, then position a trolley jack and block of wood beneath the coil spring position on the
Trailing Arm, raising the arm slightly to compress the shock absorber. On some models, it may be necessary to remove the stone protection guard first, and the rear coil spring may be removed completely if preferred. Unscrew the lower mounting bolt, followed by the upper mounting bolts, and withdraw the shock absorber. With the shock absorber on the bench, remove the cap, unscrew the nut from the top of the piston rod, and take off the upper mounting bracket, bump stop, and, where fitted, the support ring, protective tube, and protective cap. Two types of bump stop are supplied: a short version with a support ring and a long version without one. If necessary, check the action of the shock absorber by mounting it upright in a vice, fully depressing the rod, and then pulling it up; the piston rod must move smoothly over its complete length. To refit, locate the components removed from the top of the shock absorber in their correct order and screw on a new nut, tightening it and fitting the cap. Position the shock absorber in the rear wheel arch, insert the upper mounting bolts, and tighten to the specified torque. Extend the shock absorber if necessary, and insert the lower mounting bolt loosely. Raise the trailing arm until the rear suspension is set to the correct ride height, then fully tighten the shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Refit the rear coil spring, the wheel arch liner, and the roadwheel before lowering the vehicle to the ground.
