How to remove and install the Rack and Pinions in the steering gear on Audi A4?

Removal of the rack and pinions requires that the vehicle be parked so that the front wheels are in straight line position, the parking brake is placed on, the rear wheels are chocked and finally the front wheel bolts are loosened and then the car raised with the help of jackstands. Take out the front wheels and the battery out of the engine compartment. Position the steering wheel in the center and do not take out the ignition key so that the steering lock can be activated, without misaligning the steering column that will result in misaligning the contact unit of the airbag. Loose the driver side under-dash panel and fix the lower part of the steering column to the upper one, do not allow the parts to separate. Loosen the pinch bolt that holds the universal joint to the input shaft of the rack and pinions and then draw the universal joint off and push it aside. Drain both the power steering reservoir and use hose clamps to reduce the amount of fluid that will leak. Unscrew the shock absorber mounting fastener on the front lower shock absorber on the left hand side and disconnect the top of the steering knuckle upper control arms and then remove the tie-rod ends. Install the knuckle assembly to the front shock absorber assembly, delete the inner wheel well liner and on V6 models delete the front catalytic converter and heat shield mounting fasteners. Uncouple the supply and the return lines of the rack and pinions, clean up the links, empty the excess liquid and tie the links up to eliminate leakage. Loose the upper mounting fasteners on the passenger and driver sides and dismount the lower rack and pinions fastener and the upper two. Make sure that all connections are made visible, and turn the left side of the rack and pinions with the front, and retract it through the wheel-well on the left. In case the rack and pinions is broken, then it can require replacement or overhaul. To install, center rack and pinions, taking out socket head bolt of inspection hole, then, pushing the tie-rod on the right until the alignment hole shows, and then, a specially made bolt is used to secure the rack and pinions in place. Fit the rack and pinions in place, fit and screw into the securing fasteners and remove the locking bolt in the alignment hole. Install the reconnected pressure and return line fittings with new sealing washers, reconnect the tie-rod ends, replenish the fluid, bleed the system, increase the wheel bolts and verify the wheel alignment.

Drain both the power steering reservoir and use hose clamps to reduce the amount of fluid that will leak. Unscrew the Shock Absorber mounting fastener on the front lower shock absorber on the left hand side and disconnect the top of the Steering Knuckle upper Control Arms and then remove the tie-rod ends. Install the knuckle assembly to the front shock absorber assembly, delete the inner wheel well liner and on V6 models delete the front catalytic converter and heat shield mounting fasteners. Uncouple the supply and the return lines of the rack and pinions, clean up the links, empty the excess liquid and tie the links up to eliminate leakage.
