Disassemble the radiator and drivebelts of the alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioner compressor etc. Take the battery negative connection out and unscrew the splash shield underneath the engine. To ease access, the alternator, power steering pump, and the air conditioner compressor can be detached and the lines attached. With the help of an Allen key, loosen the bolts and take the pulley away out of the water pump. Unscrew the nut, and take off the special bolt that holds the lower timing cover together with the water pump assembly. Unscrew the nut and remove the upper timing cover by releasing the clips. Trace the drivebelt pulley and crankshaft sprocker on each other, unbolt the pulley with an Allen key. Unscrew the bolts and take off the lower timing belt cover, then retrieve the special spacer on the top of the cover. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise with a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt until the mark on the rear of the camshaft sprocket is at the top of the cylinder head on the left-hand side being careful not to lose the valve cover and reinforcement strips in place. Take the nut off and rotate the tensioner hub anti-clockwise in order to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Note the direction the timing belt is used to turn with an arrow, and then disflatten the timing belt by removing them off the tensioner, camshaft sprocket, intermediate shaft sprocket, and the crankshaft sprocket. Unscrew the nut, release the washer and the tensioner wheel and hub out of the front stud on the cylinder head. Unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolt holding the sprocket in place with a tool after which the bolt, washer, sprocket, and key are removed. Similarly unscrew the intermediate shaft sprocket bolt and strip the bolt, sprocket and key out. Unscrew the crankshaft sprocket bolt and take out the sprocket making sure that the crankshaft remains in place. Wipe down all the sprocks and check them over to ensure they are not worn or damaged and spin the tensioner to ensure that it turns freely. Inspect the timing belt on the wear and tear especially at the bottom of the teeth, in case of a total of 40,000 miles (60,000 km) or more, then it is better to recommend a replacement. Refitting is opposite to removing, and therefore, bypass ensuring the tightening of all the nuts and bolts to the required tightness, stationary crankshaft when refitting crankshaft sprocket, proceeding with timing belt tensioning procedure, and adjusting the tension of alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner compressor drivebelts.
