Removing the engine cover, lift up 2.0L engines to unscrew the grommets of the covers on the ballstuds, and remove piping of PCV system and secondary air combination valve, should it be fitted. To remove the crankcase breather hose, loosen the clip that attaches the crankcase breather hose to the breather pipe and loosen the bolts that hold the breather pipe to the engine and remove the breather pipe. On 2.0L engines, loosen the EVAP hoses at the right front corner and left side of the valve cover, and the crankcase ventilation pipe of the turbocharger. Take off the ignition coils, heat shield on valve cover (where fitted) and top timing belt cover through disengagement of bolts and lower timing belt cover. Take the ground strap off the valve cover, remove the valve cover off the
Cylinder Head by removing the retaining fasteners and, in case the cover is not coming off, bump the end with a block of wood and a hammer or a flexible putty knife can be used to break the seal without damaging the sealing surfaces. To install, make sure that the mating cylinder head and cover surfaces are clean, get rid of any excess sealant and previous gasket material and check to see if the rubber end plug is damaged. On 1.8L engines, first apply RTV sealant to the places where they intersect the cylinder head, apply a new valve cover gasket, a grommet gasket adapter on the spark plug tube over the studs, and with 2.0L engines, use the old rubber gasket where it is not damaged. Start with tightening the inner nuts then the outer nuts in a cross-cross manner, install the valve cover, the nuts or bolts that were removed, tighten the remaining retaining nuts to the desired torque in a few stages, and lastly, install the other parts, start the engine, and inspect the oil leakages.
