Audi 100 Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps involved in replacing a toothed timing belt and ensuring proper engine function on Audi 100?
    A:
The toothed timing belt is mostly the one that rotates the camshaft and even the coolant pump; in the case of slipping or breaking, valve timing is affected, causing the engine to suffer possible damages. Timing belt should be well tensioned and it should be regularly checked to wear. Prior to commencing work, remove the negative lead of the battery, use the handbrake, jack the front part of the car and place it on top of the axle stands. Take off the undershield and front bumper, and the two front headlights and unhook the cable attached to the bonnet lock and unbolt the crossmember. Loosen the radiator mounting bolts, but do not disconnect the hoses, and remove the radiator off the support and bring it forward. Eliminate the viscous fan unit, auxiliary drivebelt and the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner. Be sure to position the engine at TDC, do off the upper and lower timing belts covers, and keep the crankshaft motionless whilst slackening the central bolts of the vibration damper. Relax the tensioner mounting bolts, label the timing belt to indicate the direction of rotation and move the tensioner in place to loosen the belt of the camshaft and coolant pump sprockets. Unscrew the bolt which holds the vibration damper and sprocket, remove the vibration damper and timing belt. Check the belt and check its contamination and wear and replace it where and when needed and particularly when it has attained its mileage limit by the manufacturer. During refitting, make sure that the timing belt and vibration damper are properly fitted on the crankshaft, sealant is used on the bolt and tightens it when the crankshaft is on firm ground. Make sure that the TDC marks are aligned, set the tensioner to tension the belt and ensure that the tension is correct after two full crankshaft turns. Fit the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner, auxiliary drivebelt, viscous fan unit, radiator, support bracket, air ducts, crossmember, bonnet lock, front headlights, front bumper and underneath shield, then install the car in the lowered position reconnecting battery negative lead.
  • Q: How to inspect and maintain the timing belt on Audi 100?
    A:
Squeeze out the spring clips and take the upper timing cover off the front of the engine. Check the timing belt area, looking for evidence of excessive wear, fraying, cracking and damage, and indicate evidence of oil that could have leaked through a damaged oil seal. Turning the engine on the crankshaft pulley bolt with a spanner, one should check the full length of the timing belt. On models produced as far as 1994, it is important to make sure that the timing belt is running in the middle of the camshaft sprocker; otherwise, the timing belt lower idler may not be installed properly. You should also test the tension of the timing belt and adjust it should there be the need. To ensure that the timing belt tension is accurate, check the pointers on the tensioner of models produced since 1995 and ensure the two pointers do not exceed 3.0mm in distance and then adjust the tensioner. When the check has been completed, replace the upper timing cover.
