Remove the injection pump drivebelt cover or engine top cover for access to the drivebelt. Inspect the drivebelt for signs of excessive wear, fraying, cracking, and damage, and check for traces of oil that may have come from a faulty oil seal. The full length of the
Timing Belt should be checked by turning the engine with a spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Ideally, the drivebelt tension should be checked using the special AudiNAG tensioning spring; if this is not available, check the tension using the spring balance method. For those who have previously fitted an injection pump drivebelt, a visual inspection may be sufficient. Check the position of the tensioner arm in relation to the stop, ensuring there is clearance, as no clearance indicates that the drivebelt has stretched excessively. On completion of the check, refit the pump cover or engine top cover as applicable.
