Audi 100 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to examine and adjust the auxiliary drive belt on Audi 100?
    A:
Where necessary, remove any covers for access to the auxiliary drivebelt. Examine the auxiliary drivebelt along its entire length for damage and wear in the form of cuts and abrasions, fraying, and cracking. The use of a mirror and possibly a torch will help, and the engine may be turned with a spanner on the crankshaft pulley to observe all areas of the belt. If an automatic tensioner is fitted, the ribbed drivebelt may be removed by turning the tensioner clockwise using a spanner on the top lug; however, any V-belts driven by the crankshaft must be removed before taking off the ribbed belt. On models with a single drivebelt for the alternator, depress the drivebelt midway between the pulleys and check that the deflection is as specified. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the alternator mounting bolts and adjustment nut, then turn the adjustment rack bolt until the correct tension is achieved. Hold the adjustment bolt and tighten the lock nut followed by the mounting bolts. On the ADR engine where the air conditioning compressor is driven by a ribbed belt, apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands. Unbolt the torque reaction support from the front of the engine and from the crossmember, then loosen the tensioner bolts. Release the tension and remove the belt if required, or turn the tensioner clockwise using a torque wrench set to 20 Nm on the special hexagon. Tighten the bolts with the correct tension applied.
  • Q: How to inspect and check the drive belt and its components on Audi 100?
    A:
Remove the injection pump drivebelt cover or engine top cover for access to the drivebelt. Inspect the drivebelt for signs of excessive wear, fraying, cracking, and damage, and check for traces of oil that may have come from a faulty oil seal. The full length of the Timing Belt should be checked by turning the engine with a spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Ideally, the drivebelt tension should be checked using the special AudiNAG tensioning spring; if this is not available, check the tension using the spring balance method. For those who have previously fitted an injection pump drivebelt, a visual inspection may be sufficient. Check the position of the tensioner arm in relation to the stop, ensuring there is clearance, as no clearance indicates that the drivebelt has stretched excessively. On completion of the check, refit the pump cover or engine top cover as applicable.
