The first step to get rid of the water pump is to empty the cooling system, and then take off the auxiliary drivebelt(s). With petrol engine models, remove the alternator, and with models which have power steering, remove the power steering pump without unscrewing the hydraulic pipe/hose(s), being careful not to move it against the water pump housing. Then unscrew and loosen the retaining bolts to remove the pulley of the water pump followed by the removal of the drivebelt pulley (in 4-cylinder engines only). Then you should clear the area around the water pump housing assembly by removing the alternator or power steering pump bracket(s). Loose the coolant hoses on the rear of the water pump housing and the thermostat housing and unscrew the retaining studs/bolts that hold the water pump/thermostat housing to the block to remove the housing assembly. Take off and dispose the sealing ring between the block and the housing which requires replacement. The pump cannot be overhauled and the retaining bolts must be unscrewed and the gasket disassembled on a bench followed by a new one being installed on refitting the pump to the housing. In 5-cylinder engines, disassemble the timing belt rear cover, then loosen and take off the bolts that fasten the power steering pump mounting bracket to the cylinder block, placing the pump/bracket assembly out of the way of the water pump. Then unbolt the pump on the block of the cylinder and maneuver it off, retrieving and discarding the sealing ring. To refit onto 4-cylinder engines, make sure that the mating surfaces of the pump and the housing are clean and dry, install a new gasket on the housing, install the water pump on the housing, and screw in the tightening bolts of the pump into the housing accordingly. Re-fitting the housing to the cylinder block, install a new sealing ring in the recession of the housing assembly, and tighten the retaining studs/bolts to a certain torque specification. Install the coolant hoses and firmly fit the retaining clips, re-fit the alternator/power steering pump bracket(s) and fit the retaining nut/bolt. Install the pulley back into the water pump and fix the retaining bolts, then the power steering pump/alternator and auxiliary drivebelt(s). Lastly, re-introduce the cooling system. To 5-cylinder engines, install a new sealing ring to the pump and position it in the cylinder block and install the pump retaining bolts to the required tightness. Re-position the bracket of the power steering pump, screw in the mounting bolts and re-install the timing belt rear cover and refill the cooling system.
