Audi 100 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps should be followed to remove and refit a radiator on Audi 100?
    A:
In case the radiator is removed because of leakage, small leaks can be treated with radiator sealant with the radiator in its position. Start by unattaching the negative lead of the battery and take off the front bumper and drain the cooling system. In order to access it, it is better to take off the bonnet locking crossmember and label the outline of the retaining bolts before unscrewing them together with the radiator upper mounting bolts. Release the crossmember and cable off the bonnet release, putting it out of the radiator. In case the crossmember is not removed, take off the rubber sealing piece on the front side. Then remove the mounting bracket of the inner side of each headlight by unscrewing the retaining screw and taking the mounting bracket out, which are not interchangeable. Unscrew the retaining bolt, unscrew the wiring connector(s) to the cooling fans, and the cooling fan earth lead, unscrew the fan switch, and liberate the cooling fan earth lead of the body. Losten the retaining clips and remove all the coolant hoses off the radiator as well as remember their proper points of installation. In the case of models equipped with an automatic transmission, always clean up around the fluid pipe unions and then loosen and take out the holding bolts and loosen the two pipes out of the radiator and seal the ends to reduce leaking of fluid. In case of air conditioning models, loosen all the nuts and bolts which hold the condenser to the radiator but never unhook the refrigerant pipes. Depersonalize plastic covers on the side of the radiator and the intake duct in the case of necessity. Cooler, Move the power steering fluid cooler off the front of the radiator and attach it to the body so the hoses will not strain. Looseen and take out the lower nuts that hold the radiator side mountings and take off the special washers. In case the crossmember still attaches the radiator, relaxation and loosening of the upper mounting bracket injectives while positioning the radiator, avoiding disruption of the condenser in air conditioning models. In case the radiator was taken off on account of suspected blockage, reverse-flush, removing dirt off the fins with an air line or soft brush, taking pains not to cut off the sharp fins. A radiator expert is able to carry out flow test to detect any blockages in the internal parts, and any leaking radiator must be submitted to a permanent repair instead of trying to weld or solder it. When being sent to be repaired or renewed all hoses and the cooling fan switch are to be removed. Check the state of the radiator mounting rubbers and replace them in case of necessity. Refitting It is a reversal of a removal to make sure that the radiator has been correctly attached with its mounting rubbers and firmly tightened. In models that have an automatic transmission, replace the sealing rings of the fluid pipe end fittings, and lubricate them with new transmission fluid. The coolant hoses should be replaced properly and firmly clamped in place, the cooling system should be filled up and the transmission fluid topped off, should it be low.
