The inner handle of the door lock is removable without removing the trim panel by firstly removing the door handle after which the inner handle of front or rear door lock can be removed. With the front door exterior handle, it is best to first remove the door window frame and unclip the anti-theft cover (where necessary). Grab the exterior handle and slide out the cover retaining clip with caution that you do not damage with the paintwork. Unscrew the locking collar and remove the handle operating rod in the lock assembly and twist the locking clip to clear the lock cylinder housing. Unscrew the retaining screw to pull out the handle assembly of the lock cylinder and door shell and pull out the wiring connector of the handle microswitch where fitted. By removing the exterior handle, unlock the locking collar, undo the lock cylinder operating rod, disconnect any wiring connections to the lock microswitches, unclip the exterior handle surround to remove it and the lock cylinder. Prior to the dismantling of the lock cylinder assembly, consult an Audi dealer on the availability of parts. The microswitch assembly is easily undippable and renewable, and on the earlier models, the lock barrel can be renewed by prising the retaining clip in place and removing the lock cylinder. In the case of the front door lock assembly, take off the door window frame, undo the retaining clip and detach the inner button operating rod, and unconnect the wiring connectors. In models with central locking, unplug the vacuum hose out of the lock actuator, and then take the lock assembly and seal off the door. To take the rear door exterior handle off, pull off the door window frame, cover the handle cover with some tape, and break out the retaining clip to unscrew the operating rod of the lock, take out the handle assembly and surround. To access the lock of the rear door, take out the frame of the window, unlock the retaining clip and take out the lock operating rod, unclip the inner handle and button cable, and finally pull out the lock assembly, disconnection of the central locking vacuum hose. Refitting is a process which is performed in a reverse of the steps of removing, all retaining screws tightened to the required torque settings, confirming the spring engagement with the crank and the housing, all operating rods fitted, cable and hose routing checked and the lock and handles operated before final finish adjustments are made to fit the door clear of the body when closed.
