Take the
Driveshaft out of the car and use in a vice with soft jaws and loosen the CV joint boot retaining clips, cutting them down as needed. Fold back the CV joint boot and scoop out extra grease by exposing the outer constant velocity joint. In order to take the outer joint off, either a long M16 bolt or threaded rod that can force it off the driveshaft or a hammer and a soft metal drift can be used to carefully strike the inner member. Once the joint assembly is removed, remove the circlip and slide the spacer and dished washer off with the same, making note of their position, cleaning the joint carefully and checking it is in good condition or not. In the case of a satisfactory joint, get a repair kit of a new CV joint boot, circlip, spring washer, spacer, retaining clips, and grease. Place the splines on the driveshaft covered with a piece of tape, place the new CV joint boot on the splines, and take the tape off. Install the new circlip, dished washer, and spacer and make sure they are correctly oriented. Apply the grease into the ball tracks of the outer joint, pour the rest of the grease on the CV joint boot. Find the outer joint on the driveshaft splines, pinch it in and make sure it is firmly held by the circlip. Put the CV joint boot on the joint and driveshaft, and make the inner lip lift evenly to level the air pressure, and apply the retaining clips, snapping them firmly in place. Test the movement of the joint, refit the driveshaft. On petrol engine models with a manual transmission, ensure the driveshaft is clamped in a vice, the CV joint boot locating plate is tapped off, the circlip clamped and press the inner joint off. Wipe and check the inner joint, replace it in case of need, and get a repair kit in case the joint is okay. Cover the splines with a tape, pull the new CV joint boot up and place the locating plate. Apply grease in the ball tracks and place sealant on the locating plate and press the inner joint onto the shaft, holding it by a new circlip, and then tap it on the joint. Make sure that the CV joint boot lips are engaged correctly, the retaining clips are installed, and that the joint movement is observed before replacing the driveshaft. In the diesel engine models, and the petrol models that have the automatic transmission, strip off the outer joint and CV joint boot, clean out the joint and check on the wear. Replacements Renew the entire driveshaft assembly when damage is detected, or buy a repair kit when satisfactory. Apply some grease to the inner joint, clean the shaft and tape over the splines before slipping the inner CV joint boot into place. Install retaining clips on the CV joint boot, refit the outer joint, and ensure the movement of both joints and then refit the driveshaft.
