1992 Audi 100 Flywheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and inspect the gearbox and flywheel/driveplate for 4-cylinder diesel engines on 1992 Audi 100?
A: In order to take out the gearbox in the manual models, unscrew the gearbox and the clutch and in the case of automatic transmission models unscrew the automatic transmission. The flywheel/driveplate bolts are offset so that they can be fitted correctly; unscrew them whilst keeping the flywheel/driveplate fixed. Provision of a temporary bolt in the cylinder block and holding the flywheel/driveplate with a screwdriver, or make a holding tool. To remove a driveplate lift the flywheel/driveplate off the crankshaft, taking note of the position of the shim and spacer. Examine the flywheel/driveplate, making sure that the starter ring gear has not overdone the teeth. In case of damage to the driveplate or its ring gear, the entire driveplate needs to be substituted whereas flywheel ring gear can be replaced individually, preferably by a dealer of Audi/VAG. In case the clutch friction face is discolored or it is over- scored, it can be re-grounded, which should also be performed by an Audi/ VAG dealer. Replacing the flywheel/ driveplate bolts is always advisable. To perform refitting, just use an opposite path; apply the locking fluid over the threads of new bolts and tighten them to given torque. Fitting a replacement driveplate; check and adjust the position of the replacement drive as required, making sure the distance between the rear surface of the block and the face to which the torque converter will be mounted on the driveplate is 27 mm +/- 1 mm. Should it require any adjustments, take off the driveplate and install a spacer behind the driveplate to make the proper dimension making sure that the raised pip on the outer shim is pointing toward the torque converter.
