1991 Audi 100 Flywheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and inspect the gearbox and flywheel/driveplate for 5-cylinder diesel engines on 1991 Audi 100?
A: In manual models to take out the gearbox, just detach the gearbox and the clutch whereas in the automatic transmission models, just detach the automatic transmission. The flywheel/driveplate bolts are also offset to fit correctly; the bolts are unscrewed with a multi-splined key with the flywheel/driveplate held in place. To hold the flywheel/driveplate temporarily, place a wide bladed screwdriver or a purpose-made holding tool into the cylinder block, and then affix the flywheel/driveplate. Remove the flywheel/driveplate off of the crankshaft and record the location of any shim and spacer in case of removing a driveplate. Check the flywheel/driveplate and the starter ring gear in particular, but the gear should not have a significant amount of tooth wear; damaged, fit a new driveplate, but the flywheel gear can be replaced independently by a qualified dealer. In case the friction face of the clutch is discolored or scored excessively, it may be regrinded, although this is also a matter that needs to be done by a dealer. The flywheel/driveplate bolts should never be left untouched. Inspect the spigot needle bearing in the middle of the flywheel, in case of excessive running wear or in case it has been running dry, it needs to be replaced. Install the flywheel with the engine side up to push out the bearing and install the new bearing with the opposite side up until it is against the clutch side making sure that the closed side is facing the engine. In a refitting, the removal procedure must be reversed and locking compound must be applied on the threads of these new bolts prior to insertion and tightened to the correct torque and angle and of course coated bolts are necessary as holes are drilled into the crankcase.
