- Q: Where are the knock sensor(s) located, and what steps are needed to access and replace them on Audi A3?A:Knock sensors(s) are mounted on the inlet manifold side of the cylinder block, part situated on some models have two sensors. In order to reach the sensor, one has to remove the engine top cover(s). In case of inadequate access, press hard on the handbrake, lift the front part of the vehicle and hold it on axle stands. Then, unscrew the retaining screws and remove the engine undertray(s) to have access underneath. Even though the access to the knock sensor(s) is rather cumbersome, one can make it better by taking out the inlet manifold. Unhook the wiring connector either to sensor or trace the wiring and disconnect its connector. Unscrew the mounting bolt and take out the sensor out of the cylinder block. To refit, reverse of the process of removal makes the sensor and cylinder block mating surfaces clean and dry and attach the mounting bolt to the required torque to ensure correct operation.
- Q: How to disconnect and replace the knock sensor on Audi A4?A:Unhook the cable on the negative battery terminal. In the case of four-cylinder models, the procedure is applied to either of the knock sensors. Take out the intake manifold with 1.8L and 2.0L models having different procedures. Removal Unscrew the electrical connector on the knock sensor, remove the sensor, unscrew the fastener that attaches the sensor, and disconnect the electrical connector of the knock sensor. Removal is the opposite of installation, which involves the tightening of the knock sensor fastener to the recommended torque because tightening it too tight or too loose might alter sensor efficiency. In V6 models, accessory intake manifolds would be removed on 3.0L and upper intake manifolds would be removed on 3.2L models. Find the knock sensors, and trace electrical lead of the knock sensor back to electrical connector and unscrew it. Take off the sensor assembly screw and the sensor itself. The sensor mounting fastener must be tightened to the set torque when fitting a knock sensor because tightening it more or less may have an impact on performance. Removal otherwise is the opposite of installation.
