Audi A3 CV Boot

The Audi A3 CV Boot protects the constant velocity joint by sealing lubricating grease in the joint and preventing the entry of dirt, moisture, and debris. This flexible cover is at each end of the halfshaft where the drivetrain is bent as the suspension travels and the steering angles change to get the power to the wheels. It is composed of a soft rubber or hard plastic material that creates a tight seal, preventing leakage of the grease and thereby reducing friction and wear on the moving bearings within the joint. The joint is flexed when the vehicle accelerates, brakes, or turns, and the boot is flexible enough that the seal remains in place. In case of a tear or cracking of the boot, grease may leak out and contaminants may get in, which increases the chances of joint damage and vibration. The CV Boot should be able to remain flexible in hot and cold environments. Due to the steering and power provided by the front wheels, the quality of this part directly influences the reliability of the drivetrain and the handling. To ensure that the grease reservoir is maintained during constant motion, Audi makes the boot to fit exactly above the joint and axle shaft, supported by clamping bands.
