When refilling any pipe or hose, limit the amount of fluid lost by placing a polythene top on the master cylinder reservoir cap and sealing the two parts with airtight lids. Alternatively, there can be the use of flexible hoses that are sealed using a brake hose clamp and it is also possible to plug or cap metal brake pipe unions once they are disconnected so that no dirt gets into the system. Poison put a rag under any union in order to receive spilled fluid. To take the flexible hose off, unscrew the union nut of the brake pipe then remove the spring clip that holds the hose. A brake pipe spanner of the correct size should be used to loosen union nuts when a brake pipe spanner is not available a close-fitting open-ended spanner can probably be used, but this will tend to round off the nuts and may corrode them. It is possible that a self-locking wrench is required in these situations, but the damaged nuts and pipe will need replacing during reassembling. Wipe the union and area before disconnection and note down connections carefully especially when more than one union is involved. To renew a brake pipe, they may be supplied with pre-cut union nut and end flare kits at Audi dealers, or as kits at shop motor accessory stores, where careful measurement of the original must be made. When refitting, union nuts should not be overtightened because a good joint does not need tightening. Always make sure the pipes and hoses are properly laid without kinking, connect them to the given clips or brackets, and once clipped, remove the polythene cover of the reservoir, bleed the hydraulic system and verify that there are no leaks of fluid around the brake system washing away any spilled brake fluid.
