Audi A3 Fuel Filter

The Audi A3 Fuel Filter is installed to protect the engine by filtering out dirt, rust, water and other impurities before they can harm sensitive parts of the fuel system. Even modern gasoline and diesel blends can appear clean, but this does not mean that the particles that come out of the storage tanks or pump nozzles are not captured in the tank and, as such, unless the filtration is done properly, the particles may grind the injectors or overwork the pump, causing poor starts, rough idle or stalling. Within the Fuel Filter in all Audi vehicles, including the A3, water is filtered using a series of pleated paper screens, which allow the passage of high quality fuel but filter out fine debris, and on diesel models such as the A3 the design in addition filters out larger amounts of water which drain off and do not clog metal parts or contribute to microbe growth. Throughout the history of the Audi, there are two primary designs, simple in line cylinder filters for older carbureted models fitted between the mechanical pump and the carburetor, and later electronic fuel injection cars mount a pressurized Fuel Filter in the line between the tank and engine, either under the floorpan or in the engine bay, with quick disconnect fittings to make service easier. The in-tank strainer that is supplied with all Audis plays the role of first defence too, though it is not serviced until the electric pump is changed. All Audi A3 owners must bear in mind that, no matter how good the Fuel Filter is, it gets clogged with time; switching it out at the suggested time keeps the flow of fuel high and hence the performance of any Audi running smoothly.

Audi A3 Fuel Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the fuel filter on Audi A3?
    A:
On later models, there is no longer any requirement to drain water from the filter. The fuel filter is mounted in the right-hand front corner of the engine compartment, so place rags around it to absorb any spilled fuel. Early models have a water-extraction plug in the filter cover, which was discontinued on later models; if present, unscrew the plug and use a pipette to draw out approximately 100 ml of fuel, ensuring a container is handy for disposal. Next, undo the screws around the top of the filter housing and lift the cover off, placing rags around to catch any spills. Remove and discard the old seal, as a new one must be used upon refitting; on early models, also remove the inner seal from the top of the filter element's center pillar. Withdraw the old filter element and discard it, then insert the new filter element, ensuring it is centrally located in the housing. For early models, place a new inner seal on the top of the filter element, fit a new seal to the cover, and then refit it to the housing, tightening the screws securely. If applicable, refit and tighten the water-extraction plug. Finally, start and run the engine at idle, checking around the fuel filter for any leaks, noting that it may take a few seconds of cranking before the engine starts.
