Audi A3 Rack and Pinion Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on the steering gear and track rod on Audi A3?
    A:
To change the steering gear rubber gaiters, take off the track rod end balljoint and screw out the locking nut without losing track of the position of the screwed nut. Wipe down the rubber gaiter to eliminate all dirt or moisture, and then hold the retaining clips and slip off the gaiter of the steering gear housing and track rod, noting the position it is positioned. Wipe the track rod and the steering gear housing by wiping with an appropriate grease on the rack surface by rotating the steering wheel to make the rack reach its maximum length and then returned to its center position. Insert the new gaiter on the track rod, making sure that it fits back on the steering gear housing without being able to twist and lifting the outer sealing lip to balance air pressure. Fasten the gaiter using new retaining clips, make crimped-type clips as tight as possible and eliminate any loose slack. Then screw the locking nut in and reconnect the track rod end balljoint. To replace the track rods, have to remove the steering gear rubber gaiter, and in situations where space is limited, have to unfit the steering gear and place the gaiter in a vice. Fix the steering rack in place with one of the spanners and loosen the balljoint nut with the other and then loosen and completely unscrew the track rod. Install the new track rod with the steering rack and screw the nut on making sure it is tightened to the required torque without moving the rack, which may require a crows foot adapter to reach the required location. Lastly, reconnect the steering gear/rubber gaiter and adjust the front wheel alignment as required.
