The parking brake cable consists of two sections, a right- and a left-hand section, linked to the lever by a compensator plate, and each section can be removed individually. To begin, remove the exhaust system heatshield to access the front end of the parking brake cable. Slacken the adjuster nut to obtain maximum free play, then disengage the inner cable from the parking brake lever compensator plate and free the cable from its guide. Next, remove the retaining clip and free the front end of the outer cable from the body, working back along the length of the cable while noting its correct routing, and free it from all relevant retaining clips. Unscrew the nut securing the cable to the axle arm. For models with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum and detach the parking brake cable from the brake shoe lever, then carefully tap the outer cable out from the brake backplate using a hammer and pin punch, removing it from underneath the vehicle. For models with rear disc brakes, disengage the inner cable from the caliper parking brake lever, remove the outer cable retaining clip, and detach the cable from the caliper. Refitting is a reversal of the removal procedure, ensuring that the cable is correctly routed and retained by all necessary clips and ties, followed by adjusting the parking brake upon completion.
