For models with rear drum brakes, begin by removing the brake drum, while for those with rear disc brakes, remove the rear hub. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, lever the oil seal out of the rear of the hub or drum, taking note of its orientation. Next, remove the inner wheel bearing from the hub or drum, then support the hub and tap the outer wheel bearing outer race out of position with a hammer and punch. After turning the hub or drum over, tap the inner wheel bearing outer race out as well. Thoroughly clean the hub or drum bore, eliminating all dirt and grease, and polish away any burrs or raised edges that could impede reassembly. Inspect the surface for cracks or signs of wear, renewing it if necessary, as the wheel bearings and oil seal must be replaced whenever disturbed due to potential damage to the outer races. Acquire new wheel bearings, an oil seal, and a multi-purpose grease suitable for wheel bearings. During reassembly, apply a light film of clean engine oil to each wheel bearing outer race to facilitate installation. Securely support the hub or drum and position the outer wheel bearing outer race, tapping it fully into place with a suitable tubular spacer that only contacts the race's outer edge. After turning the hub or drum over, install the inner wheel bearing outer race in the same manner, ensuring both outer races are correctly seated and wiping them clean. Work grease thoroughly into both taper roller wheel bearings and apply a smear of grease to the outer races before fitting the taper roller wheel bearing to the inner wheel bearing outer race.
