2015 Audi A3 Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Cylinder Head from the engine and transmission for 1.6 litre DOHC petrol engines on 2015 Audi A3?
A: The engine and transmission can be removed off the vehicle by firstly separating the transmission to the engine, then the upper and lower inlet manifolds and lastly the exhaust manifold. Removing the thermostat only requires unbolting the thermostat housing of the left-hand end of the cylinder head and detaching it of the rear engine coolant pipe, then replacing the gasket and O-ring. Then, disassemble the exhaust gas recirculation valve by disregarding the oil seals and acquiring new ones, then loosen the timing cover, camshaft housing, camshafts and hydraulic tappets. Loosen the bolts of the cylinder head progressively in the reversed order of their tightening and loosen them, being careful to obtain new ones as they should not be reused. Lift the cylinder head off the block, strike lightly with a soft faced mallet as needed and remove the cylinder head gasket. To check, make the mating faces of the cylinder head and block clean using a scraper to remove all gasket and carbon debris, take care of aluminum surfaces. To avoid making oil and water undergoes with debris and prevent carbon contamination, seal the holes with adhesive tape and paper, and apply grease in the fitting between the pistons and bores. Look at the head and block, and remove the scratches or nicks, filing the shallow ones and referring the serious ones to a specialist. Prior to refitting, fit the pistons half-way down their bores to prevent contact between the valves, clean the holes of the cylinder head bolts and have the locating dowels installed. Install a new cylinder head gasket and place the dowels, place the cylinder head, and install new cylinder bolts tightening them by hand. Install the cylinder head bolts in three phases as the order is given and replace the hydraulic tappets, camshafts and camshaft housing, and afterwards the timing cover. Replace the exhaust gas recirculation valve using new oil seals, clean the contact surfaces and put the thermostat housing back together using a new gasket and O-ring. Last but not least reconnect the exhaust and inlet manifolds and reconnect the transmission to the engine and re-install the assembly back in the vehicle.
