Q: How to remove and refit the front belt tensioner on the timing belt for 2.0 litre DOHC petrol engines on 2015 Audi A3?
A: In order to install the timing belt, one must first remove the tensioner/roller by loosening the tensioner hub nut and withdrawing the part, with the exception being that on engines post June 2004 the tensioner hub is found in a recess in the cylinder head. To avoid accidental piston-to-valve contact, turn the crankshaft anti-clockwise, unscrew the sprocket bolt of the camshaft, and remove the sprocket, washer, sprocket and key, otherwise, a 2 legged puller will be necessary, or a VAG special puller can be used. Refit the crankshaft sprocket bolt, undoing and discarding it, again, without rotating the crankshaft, then screw a screwdriver, being careful not to rotate the crankshaft on a manual gearbox model, or taking out the starter motor and screwdriver on an automatic model, in the ring gear, and then re-attach it to the sprocket. Wipe down all sprockers and check wear and tear, spin the tensioner roller to ensure it works well and replace tensioner where necessary. To refit, fit the tensioner roller and spring assembly in reverse order then re-connect the timing belt. Find the key on the camshaft, reinstall the sprocket and bolt, tightening to the desired torque with the sprocket in place, secure the narrow web facing forwards, and ensure the crankshaft is turned clockwise to the TDC position then reinstall the timing belt. Lastly, find the sprocker in the crankshaft, and fit a new bolt without lubricating the threads, and fit it in, then ensure the crankshaft does not turn by holding it in the TDC position and fitting the timing belt in its place.
