Audi A4 Clutch Slave Cylinder

The Audi A4 Clutch Slave Cylinder allows the driver to cut off the engine feed to the gearbox in a very short time in order to make gear changes feel smooth and safe. This hydraulic part works together with a master cylinder and is supplied with pressurized brake fluid whenever the clutch pedal is depressed, which forces a rod to contact the release fork and release the clutch disc and flywheel, creating no load on the transmission and enabling a shift to occur without grinding. Previous models applied a mechanical connection with cables or levers but today almost all Audi sedan and wagon vehicles use the hydraulic Clutch Slave Cylinder since the hydraulic force multiplies the force of the pedal, provides a more uniform engagement and fits better in tight engine bays. Although what they achieve is similar, the two setups vary in their feel and maintenance in that cables stretch and require some adjustment whereas the hydraulic type is dependent on clean and full fluid and seals with no leaks. Throughout the years of production, Audi retained the basic single-piston design, and thus people will see only slight variations in their dimensions to conform to certain bell housings, which are not a complete overhaul. The tell-tale signs of a faulty Clutch Slave Cylinder are a sinking pedal, visible fluid around the bell housing or trouble changing gears. Upon such occurrence, replacement of the Clutch Slave Cylinder will help restore normal pedal pressure and ensure all Audi shifts are sharp and retain the sporty nature that drivers have come to associate with an Audi A4.

Audi A4 Clutch Slave Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Clutch Slave Cylinder on Audi A4?
    A:
Firstly, put the shift lever in Neutral and remove the key in the ignition switch to remove the clutch release cylinder. Activate the parking brake and block the rear wheels to stop rolling, and then lift the front part of the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Then take out the lower splash shield. In other V6 models, one might need to remove the front of the exhaust system and to remove the left side driveaxle off of the flange shaft, to clear the driveaxle out of the way in order to reach the clutch release cylinder. Attach the lever to the shaft of a shift and break apart the shift lever and mounting nut. Disconnect the pressure line with the release cylinder by removing the clip, and be ready to spill some fluid, and seal the line so as to keep the loss and contamination to a minimum. Use the removal bolt of the release cylinder and yank the cylinder out of the transaxle. Installation: To install it, lubricate the end of the pushrod with copper grease, and add lithium-base grease to the section of the boot that fits into the bore of the transaxle. Attach the release cylinder to the release lever directly into the bore to be certain that the pushrod is seated properly in the release lever pocket. Insert the clip, attach the pressure line to the cylinder and make sure that it is firmly attached. Install the hydraulic line release cylinder mounting bolt, provided, and screw it as tight as needed. The rest of the installation is in the same sequence of removal, with some more steps involved, such as bleeding the system, ensuring that the brake fluid reservoir is full and filling it up, and cleaning any spilled brake fluid with water.
