Audi A3 Wheel Hub

The Audi A3 Wheel Hub provides smooth steering when each wheel is secured to the suspension and allows it to spin with minimal friction. The Wheel Hub is located between the drive axle and the brake disc or brake drum, with hardened bearings, studs, sensors, and even the brake rotor attached to a single robust frame of hard steel that bolts directly to the chassis. The majority of Audi models today use a sealed unit style Wheel Hub, an all-in-one assembly containing the bearings and frequently the ABS sensor sealed within one housing, and the whole unit is replaced when wear is found. Previous or dedicated front-drive designs on the same Audi platform employ a press-apart type, where the knuckle needs to be removed prior to the hub and bearing being separated and re-pressed, with some non-driven rear ends having opposed and replaceable tapered roller bearings. The three layouts have the same purpose, but they vary in the approach to service, bearing style, and disassembly requirements. Splined teeth are applied in all the versions to connect with the axle, and all flange bolts are given the right amount of torque to avoid vibration or failure. When replacing an old A3 Wheel Hub, the bolt pattern, flange offset, and axle extension must match the original build, since this is what provides quiet rotation and preserves the safety systems built into any Audi. Rumbling bearings may jeopardize performance, and hence a new Wheel Hub will ensure your Audi is firmly, evenly, and smoothly planted and your Audi is always road-ready.

Choose original equipment manufacturer Wheel Hub for great performance and strong durability. They use Audi's official craftsmanship and high-grade materials, and meet strict quality standards. Audi A3 Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Does the renewal of the wheel hub bearings require the removal of the wheel bearing housing on Audi A3?
    A:
The hub bearings do not need to be removed in order to renew. The procedure entails the removal of the wheel bearing housing leaving the suspension strut in place but it can be removed together. Any self-locking nuts and bolts that have been disturbed in the process of removal are to be replaced. Start by taking off the wheel trim or hub cap and loosening the driveshaft retaining bolt by 90 degrees when the car is on the wheels, and the loosening of the wheel bolts by not going beyond 90 degrees to avoid damaging the wheel bearing. On removing the front roadwheel, jack up the front of the car and place on axle stands after the handbrake has been applied. Unscrew and dismount driveshaft retaining bolt and dismount ABS Wheel sensor along with unbolting the brake hose/wiring bracket off the strut. To take off the brake disc loosen the guide pins and place the hydraulic brake hose inside the caliper, then hold the caliper firmly on the suspension coil spring so as not to strain it. Reassemble Unscrew the splash plate of the wheel bearing housing, and weaken the nut attaching the steering track rod balljoint to the housing, with an Allen key to hold the balljoint pin still in place as necessary. Unscrew the nuts attaching the lower balljoint to lower arm, push the lower arm downwards and tap the driveshaft on the hub splines and remove the bottom of the wheel bearing housing. In the event that the driveshaft is close a puller might be required. Unscrew the nut and loosen the clamp bolt which holds the wheel bearing housing on the strut, and loosen the housing on the strut with a special tool, or a cold chisel of a size suitable to fit the housing. To refit, clean up the splines of the driveshaft outer joint and hub and lubricate with new engine oil. Install the wheel bearing assembly and use hub with the splines of the driveshaft and insert the new hub bolt, which should be hand tightened. Fit the bearing housing of the wheel bearing to the suspension strut and fit the strut-to-wheel bearing housing clamp bolt, correcting the new retaining nut and tightening it to the recommended torque. Install a lower arm Ball Joint and track rod ball joint and fasten the corresponding nuts to their desired torque. Re-fit splash plate, brake disc, caliper and ABS wheel sensor. Make sure that the outer joint has been pulled squarely into the hub, and re-fit the roadwheel. Install an assistant to push the brake pedal and tighten the driveshaft retaining bolt against the recommended steps, and one can be quite precise with an angle gauge. Lastly, place the vehicle on the ground, screw the vehicle roadwheel bolts, and then re-assemble the wheel trim or hub cap.
