Audi A3 Ball Joint

The Audi A3 Ball Joint is the point where the suspension and steering swing together to ensure that the wheels remain fixed as you turn the steering wheel or hit a bump. Each Ball Joint must be mounted between the steering knuckle and the control arm and has a hardened steel stud in a socket, guarded by a rubber boot that contains grease and keeps grit out. This spherical interface also allows the knuckle to turn laterally with the control arm being lifted up or down, providing the agile road feel people desire from an Audi hatchback or sedan. The majority of the front-driven A3 models use a lower follower Ball Joint since the MacPherson strut is applied to support the vehicle with the spring and strut tower, and thus the joint is primarily applied to ensure the automobile is straight. This is present in Quattro variants, but a few sporty trims can upgrade to performance joints with internal springs reducing vibration and maintaining close tolerances when the ride height is dropped. Earlier Audi compacts applied an older double wishbone design with upper and lower Ball Joints, and in the latter systems the lower was the loaded type with the real weight of the chassis. No matter the style, Audi Ball Joint is designed to support thousands of miles of movement without adding unnecessary play. Wear also intrudes when the boot rips and the lubricant is replaced by dirt. The boot can produce clunks, unstable steering or an uneven flat tire tread that will indicate when a replacement is necessary. Periodic maintenance inspections assist in making sure that your Audi remains predictable and safe.

Audi A3 Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the steps involved in removing and refitting the ball joint and associated components on Audi A3?
    A:
A self-locking nut or bolts disturbed during the removal should be replaced by default. Removal One must remove the key retaining nut by unscrewing and then use a universal Ball Joint separator to release the Ball Joint out of the wheel bearing housing and remove the Ball Joint. Then, when possible, take out the wheel trim or hub cap and loosen the drive shaft holding bolt when the vehicle is on its wheels, being careful not to loosen the hub bolt more than 90 degrees or the wheel bearing will be destroyed. Tighten the wheel bolts, use the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle, put axle stands under it and then remove the relevant roadwheel. Unscrew and remove the driveshaft retaining bolt, unscrew the front suspension lower arm Ball Joint-to-lower arm retaining nuts, force the lower arm downwards to loosen the Ball Joint studs and with soft-faced mallet removes the bottom end of the wheel bearing housing. When the driveshaft is quite tight, a puller that is fastened to the hub might be required. To fit the wheel bearing housing stay in place hold a block of wood between the strut and the inner body panel and unscrew and remove the Ball Joint retaining nut and pull the Ball Joint. Removed the Ball Joint, examining the free movement without uneasiness and examining the rubber gaiter, changing it in case of wear. To refit, screw the Ball Joint to the wheel bearing housing then screw on a new retaining nut and tighten it to the recommended torque, with an Allen key as necessary to stop it rotating. Refit the wheel bearing housing, then take out the wooden block, push in the strut and refit the Ball Joint to the lower arm with new nuts, making sure that they are tightened to the required torque. Re-fit the driveshaft retaining bolt, into which, of course, you need to screw it in tight enough to cause the driveshaft to engage completely into the hub, and then re-fitting the roadwheel. Fit an assistant to press the brake pedal and screw the driveshaft retaining bolt in the given steps with an angle gauge precision and cautiously ensure that the car is not on the wheels when doing this so as to avoid the breakage of the wheel bearing. Lastly, bring the vehicle to the ground surface, screw the roadwheel bolts and repeat the process of attaching the wheel trim or hub cap.
