Audi A3 Wheel Bearing

The Audi A3 Wheel Bearing ensures that every corner of the vehicle spins smoothly and safely by providing low-friction rotation that keeps handling and tires crisp and even. This small part is fitted within the hub and enables the vehicle weight to be borne and the wheel to be rotated over balls or tapered rollers with virtually no drag, and this factor has a direct relationship with steering feel, braking response, and cabin quietness. Audi hubs today enclose the Wheel Bearing in a sealed cartridge, which helps protect the internal grease against road splash. There have been three packages across the Audi line. The common is the sealed unit hub where the Wheel Bearing, mounting flange, and ABS sensor are combined into a single cartridge, thus the installation process is never complicated as you can simply unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one. On certain front-drive designs the knuckle needs to be taken out so that the bearing and hub can be pressed out and affixed together, a fact that drivers feel in longer labor time rather than in actual use. Even non-driven axles in earlier or rear positions still use opposed tapered roller pairs, allowing grease to be repacked or the Wheel Bearing changed only when the races wear. Irrespective of the type, the tolerances applied during the manufacturing of the Audi ensure low vibration, proper alignment, and no heat build-up that may cause the wheels to wobble. Adherence to mileage suggestions and attention to growls will help any A3 roll on with the sure-footed reputation that is expected of an Audi.

Audi A3 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the rear wheel bearing housing on Audi A3?
    A:
To install the removal of the rear wheel bearing housing, use the chocking of the front wheels, lift the rear part of the car with the jack, and keep it on the axle supports. Start with detaching the rear coil spring and rear hub, and then unbolt the splash plate off the rear bearing wheel housing. Loosen the wiring, loosen the mounting bolt, and take out the ABS sensor out of the housing. Then, unscrew the bolt in the rear Shock Absorber, then the bolts of the upper and bottom transverse links, then the bolts of the rear track control rod. Make sure that you support the rear wheel bearing housing, unscrew the mounting bolts on the Trailing Arm, and disconnect the anti-roll bar link. Remove the wheel bearing housing of rear wheel of vehicle. To refitting, always leave off tightening the mounting bolts until the coil spring and shock absorber are attached and the suspension is in full extension. Install the rear wheel bearing housing by attaching it to the rear track control rod and the transverse links, connecting the bolts with the hands. Install the housing in the trailing arm, but loosely install the rear upper bolt, which is then followed by installing and tightening the other bolts to the required torque. Install the splash plate again and crank the bolts of the splash plate, then replace the rear hub. Install the centre of the rear hub at the correct distance between the wheel arch and the ground, with the help of a trolley jack. Install the track control rod, lower transverse link, and upper transverse link bolts in that order and make sure the washer does not touch the splash plate. Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting bolt, remove the trolley jack and refit the rear coil spring. Install the ABS sensor again, screw the mounting bolt and re-connect the wiring. Lastly, replace the roadwheel, lower the vehicle, loosen the roadwheel bolts and refit the wheel trim or hub cap, and recheck the rear wheel alignment and correct it in case of need by an Audi dealer.
  • Q: Can the rear wheel bearing be replaced without changing the rear wheel hub on Audi A3?
    A:
The bearings of the rear wheels cannot be replaced without the replacement also of the rear hub because the outer races are made in the hub, and in case of excessive wear they cannot be seen without the replacement of the whole rear hub, and the rear hub nut must always be replaced when removed. The first step involves chocking the front roadwheels and jacking the rear of the vehicle high in the air and placing it on axle stands, unscrewing the handbrake and removing the corresponding rear roadwheel. The second step is to dismount the rear brake caliper and mounting bracket without disconnecting the hydraulic brake pipe, and positioning the caliper clear of the brake disc, and supported in an appropriate place. Unscrew the crosshead screw, take out the brake disc on the hub and take out the dust cap on the hub with a screwdriver or a cold chisel. Unscrew and take out the hub bolt using a multi-spline key, which is fixed to a high torque, and the socket extension bar may be required in order to loosen it; the hub bolt needs to be replaced every time. Insert a appropriate puller, remove the hub and bearings on the stub axle, and with a sharp cold chisel scrape the race off the stub axle base to ensure that the puller legs engage in the stub axle. Inspect the bearings and hub for wear, pitting and damage and where any damage can be identified, replace the hub entirely. To refit Refitting: Wipe the stub axle, ensure that the bearing races are sufficiently oiled with the appropriate grease and verify that the inner bearing race is properly aligned in the hub with the ABS rotor firmly fitted into the inner end of the hub. Position the hub as far as possible on the stub axle, screw on the new bolt and tighten it to the required torque. Inspect the dust cap and replace in case of damages with a properly tight dust cap that must be tapped by a hammer carefully into the hub to ensure the dust cap fits properly and no moisture should get into the bearing limiting its service life. Lastly, reinstall the brake disc and tighten screw of crosshead, reconnect rear brake mounting bracket and caliper, reconnect roadwheel and drop vehicle to the ground.
