Take out the
Driveshaft of the vehicle with tripod type inner joints partaking a star shape on the outside. Clamp the driveshaft in a soft-jawed vice and remove the outer joint boot retaining clips, removing them with a scalpel. Position the CV joint boot to reveal the constant velocity joint and rub the excess grease off. Tap the joint off the driveshaft with a soft-faced mallet, remove the circlip, thrust washer, and dished washer and record their orientation. Dispose of the CV joint boot and wipe the constant velocity joint with an appropriate solvent, cleaning and checking it against wear or damage. Should any parts be worn, renew the complete joint assembly; otherwise, buy a new boot, clips, circlip, and grease. Tape the splines and then fling the new boot over the driveshaft and then take off the tape. Built in dished washer with the convex side inward, then thrust washer in and pack the joint with half the grease, leaving the rest in the boot. Install a new circlip and tap the joint on the driveshaft until the circlip clips. Make sure the boot is properly positioned and be sure to fit the large metal retaining clip with no loose ends. Test the movement of the joint, and reconnect the driveshaft to the vehicle. With tripod inner joints of the CV, identify the press-fit metal cover and unscrew the outer joint boot clips. Initially fasten the joint in the vice, pry the metal cap off, wipe off excess grease, and scrape away the O-ring. Alignment Marking Withdraw the outer member and keep rollers on the tripod. Wash the parts, check for wear, and should they appear to be all right, get a repair kit. Cover the splines, slide the new boot and clips over the driveshaft, and align the tripod with the previously marked marks. Install a new circlip, re-install the rollers, and grease the joint. Tie up the boot and examine the grease distribution, and install the O-ring and new cover, attaching it with tabs. In the case of bail-and-cage type inner CV joints, unscrew the boot clip, push the metal ring out of the joint, and scrape off surplus grease. Take out the circlip and push the driveshaft out of the joint and retrieve the dished washer. Unzip the boot, attach the dished washer, fit the joint, and use a new circlip. Installation: Mark the position where the boot will be installed, stuff the joint and boot with grease, position it, and then fix the boot clip. Last but not least, test the movement, and install the driveshaft to the car.
