In order to be safe, the fuel tank should be regularly emptied in a well ventilated space. Start by turning off the battery negative lead and the fuel tank filler top. Then trace the clamping ring out of the filler neck rubber and peel off the rubber out of the panel. Lift the boot lid and peel off the floor cover then take out the vent lines attached to the filler neck rubber and to the gravity/vent valve (North American models). Raise the rear of the car and lock it on axle stands and check the front wheels. Prepare an appropriate container under the fuel tank outlet, locate the supply and return line to the fuel tank and disconnect the lines and drain the fuel. Unscrew the sealing cap of the underbody, remove the overflow line on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment and unclip the vent line on the top of the fuel tank. Unplug the wiring at the fuel gauge sender unit, unscrew the mounting nuts and bolts then remove the clamping plates to lift the fuel tank out of the luggage compartment. In case the tank is polluted with sediment or water, take out the gauge sender unit and swill the tank out with clean fuel. In case the tank is damaged or leaks, then the specialists should repair it or replace it and one should by no means sell or welder the fuel tank due to safety concerns. The opposite of removal is the refitting.
