On refitting, the removal of the old balljoint entails the replacement of the retaining nut. Start with the handbrake, lifting the front of the car, placing it on axle stands and then removal of the relevant front roadwheel. When the wheel is removed, then screw on the brake disc to the hub using a roadwheel bolt. In case the balljoint is reusable, use a straight-edge and a scriber to mark the relationship of the balljoint to the track rod adjuster. Retain the track rod adjuster with the unlocked balljoint, loosen the balljoint locknut 1/4 of a turn, but do not move the lockut from this position since this will act as a reference point during refitting. On refitting, loosen the nut that holds the steering gear track rod balljoint to the strut, leave in by a couple of threads, then remove the balljoint tapered shank with a universal balljoint separator, unscrew the nut, then set the track rod off the strut, discard the nut, and wait to refit. Count the number of turns that it requires to unscrew the ball joint and clamping ring on the track rod adjuster. Wipe the balljoint and threads off and replace the balljoint should its movement be loose, too stiff or too worn or damaged; carefully check the taper of the studs and the threads and in case the gaiter has been damaged then the gaiter itself is inseparable and the entire assembly should be replaced. To refit, have the clamping ring in place, screw the balljoint on the track rod adjuster the number of turns which were counted when removing it, and bring the balljoint lockut within a quarter of a turn of the track rod, keeping any marks made during removal in position. Find the balljoint shank in the strut and insert the new retaining nut and tighten it to the required torque. Install back the roadwheel, lower the vehicle to the ground and engage the roadwheel bolts to the required tightness. Check and adjust the front wheel position (where necessary), finally tighten the balljoint locknut to the recommended torque.
