The refitting will necessitate the use of a new steering column universal joint clamp bolt and nut, a rack and pinions passenger end mounting bolt and nut, and new sealing rings to the feed and return pipes. The first step is to connect the negative battery terminal to disconnect and then put on the handbrake, jack the front of the car, and place it on axle stands, and then take off both front road wheels. It is recommended to have at least one road wheel bolt secured to the discs to the hubs. Then detach the vacuum servo unit and on models with ABS, disconnect the brake pipes to the hydraulic unit and the rear brake pipes to the unions on the bulkhead to the engine compartment, label each of the pipes and seal the ends, reducing fluid run-off. In non-ABS models, a similar process goes with the brake pipes. Open the steering column universal joint clamp bolt by folding the trim cover, creating alignment marks, and then removing the clamp bolt, nut, and washer, disposing of the old ones. Install brake hose clamps to reduce the loss of fluids through the rack and pinions hoses, label the unions to be assembled properly, and loosen the feed and return pipe union bolts of the rack and pinions, be ready to spill fluid. Disconnect the wiring connector with the rack and pinions servotronic valve (unless none fitted), loosen the power steering pipes of retaining clips, yank the track rods off the rack and pinions. Unscrew the rack and pinions bolts, observing how all the wiring and hosing has been laid out, and carefully dis-fit the pinion with the column, and have it maneuvered out of position, taking care not to harm any parts. Inspect the pinion housing gaiter to ensure damage is non-existent and replace where necessary. Look at the rack and pinions to see if there is wear or damage and make sure that the rack moves without any problems and that there is no leakage. A dealer should overhaul the rack and pinions housing whereas the home mechanic is able to renew gaiter track rod ball joints and track rods. To refit, make sure that the pinion housing gaiter fits in place, fit the rack and pinions in place and engage the pinion with the column then refit the mounting bolts with a replacement nut on the passenger side. Find the inner ends of the track rod, reconnect feed and return pipe using new sealing rings and tighten union bolts. To install the braking system components, reconnect wiring, or reconnect wiring to the steering column universal joint (at the steering column end of the steering column), replace clamp bolt to steering column and reassemble a servotronic valve (as needed). Install the wheels of the road, lower the car, and screw the wheel bolts. Once the suspension is cleared, screw inner bolts of the track rod, and fix them using tabs of locking plates. Last but not the least, fill the fluid reservoir, bleed the hydraulic and braking systems and inspect the front wheel alignment.
