1993 Audi 100 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and refit the auxiliary drive belt for 5-cylinder petrol engines on 1993 Audi 100?
A: The alternator and power steering pump are powered by the drive belt which in models fitted with air-conditioning also powers the compressor and a tensioner kept by a spring maintains the appropriate tension. To take off the drive belt, it is best to apply handbrake, raise the front part of the car and place it on axle supports. Lift the undershield that is located under the engine compartment and take off the front retaining lug and then the front bumper and both front headlights. Unbolt the crossmember to the front supports and side panels of the engine compartment, disconnect the cable of the bonnet lock and take it out. In case, the drive belt is reused, label it clockwise. The retaining nut can then be unscrewed by unscrewing the viscous fan with a thin spanner behind the fan. Prepare a pin that can fit in the hole on the tensioner to hold it and remove drive belt. Clamp a spanner on the flats supplied, work the tensioner clockwise, and put the pin in, observe the routing of the drive belt, and then slide it off the pulleys and idler. To refit, find the drive belt that goes around the pulleys and idler and make sure it is properly fitted to the grooves. Using the spanner, rotate the tensioner clockwise and then take out the pin and then keep on releasing the tensioner gradually to make sure that the drive belt fits in properly. Install the viscous fan again and fit the retaining nut after which the crossmember and cable are refitted, and the crossmember is immediately reinstalled together with the front headlights, front bumper, and undershield and the car is lowered down to the ground.
