Q: How to remove the oil pump on 1992 Audi 100?
A: The timing belt and crankshaft sprocket can only be removed by first removing the sump and any lubrication components. Assuming it is necessary, take off the inner cover of the timing belt. Install a screwdriver to bang the tabs on the lockplate back, unscrew the bolts on the support bracket of the oil pickup tube on the crankcase, unscrew the bottom of the flange of the oil pump, and reclaim the lockplate. Take out the tube and the gasket or O-ring. Then unscrew the mounting bolts, and remove the oil pump off the crankshaft and in front of the cylinder block, taking back the gasket with it. To inspect, remove the countersunk screws which hold the pump cover using the screwdriver and remove the cover to reveal the gears. Before removing the gears check that there is a mark on the exposed face of the gears; otherwise make a mark in order to identify which side to face the engine. Unscrew the pressure relief valve plug, and remove the plug, sealing ring, spring and plunger. Wipe down all parts, check the pump casing and cover of wear or scoring, the plunger of the pressure relief valve, and its seating. Examine the gears; new gears should be installed as a pair. Take out the oil seal on the front side of the pump, oil the lip of the new seal, and tap it into a block of wood. Assemble the pump again by inserting the gears and cover making sure the slotted end of the inner gear is turned towards the crankshaft and the outer gear is installed just as it was previously. Apply oil to fill the intersections between the gears and then fasten the cover screws. reinstate the pressure relief valve elements and screw on the plug. To refit, put on a new gasket on the front of the cylinder block, grease it and find the oil pump making sure that the inner gear fits in with the crankshaft dog and that the oil seal is not damaged. Install the bolts and tight them in a diagonal fashion to the required torque and install a new gasket or O-ring over the pickup tube and tighten the bolts, bending the lock tabs over the bolts, where applicable. Lastly, re install the timing belt inner cover, sump and timing belt and sprocket.
