1992 Audi 100 Fuel Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace and renew the fuel filter in 4-cylinder and 5-cylinder engines on 1992 Audi 100?
A: In the 4-cylinder engines, the fuel filter is located on the bulkhead at the back of the engine compartment. The first thing to do is to loosen the clips and unattach the hoses of the right-hand front and left-hand rear of the filter. Then loosen the clamp nut and remove the fuel filter without removing the remaining two hoses by ensuring that there is a container beneath the fuel filter to absorb any spilled fuel. Keep the filter head in place using spanner on the large hexagon and unscrew the fuel filter with an oil filter strap to hold it. Insert the clean fuel into the new filter and apply a small amount of fuel to the rubber seal and then screw it on to the head and tighten it with the hand. Insert plastic insert (where necessary) and place the filter in the bracket and screw up the clamp nut. Once the hoses are reconnected, tighten the clamps, and then begin starting the engine and inspecting it to determine any leaks of fuel. In engines with a 5-cylinder, the fuel filter is located on the engine mounting bracket on the left side. Begin by unconnection of the wiring to the water level sender (where fitted) and place a container below the filter to receive any spilled fuel. Unscrew the union bolt on top of the filter keeping the banjo bolt fixed by use of another spanner and remove the bolt, disconnect the fuel line and retrieve the sealing washers. Support the filter in place using an oil filter strap and unscrew the banjo bolt in the top of the head recovering the O-ring seal. Withdraw the filter carefully and pour its contents in the container. Move the water level sender/drain plug over to the new filter with a new O-ring seal and pour clean fuel in the new filter and wipe a small portion of fuel on the rubber seal. Find the filter on the head, screw the banjo bolt into a new O-ring seal, and screw it tightly. Install again the fuel line with new sealing washers on the banjo and tighten the union bolt to the correct torque. Fitted, reconnect the wiring of the water level sender, then start the engine, and it should idle, whilst inspecting against fuel leakage. Also, press the accelerator pedal a number of times sharply and make sure that no bubbles are present in the fuel passing in the transparent hose between the filter and the injection pump.
