The ECM is located in the air plenum near the base of the windshield in the engine compartment. Before replacing the ECM, connect a diagnostic scan tool to the diagnostic plug under the left side of the dashboard and record the ECM coding data. When the connector is detached from the ECM, adaptation values are erased, but the contents of OTC memory remain intact. Switch the ignition OFF, remove the windshield wipers, and take off the rubber weather-strip from the plenum base. Carefully pull away the plenum cover from the base of the windshield, ensuring not to use a screwdriver or pry tool against the windshield glass to avoid cracking it. Disconnect the washer fluid hoses from the back of the washer jets when removing the plenum cover. For ECMs without a metal anti-theft housing, release the ECM harness connectors and use a screwdriver to press the locking lugs of the bracket to the side before removing the ECM toward the front. For ECMs with a metal anti-theft housing, a heat gun with a semicircular nozzle is necessary to remove the ECM. Press the locking lug of the bracket to the side and remove the ECM with the anti-theft housing toward the front. The ECM is secured to the metal anti-theft housing using a locking mechanism and snap-off screws coated with a locking compound. To disconnect the harness connectors from the ECM, it must be removed from the metal anti-theft housing. Position the ECM so that the locking mechanism is accessible, place a clean rag below it, and adjust the heat gun for maximum heat output. Guide the nozzle of the heat gun onto the locking mechanism threads, switch it on, and heat for approximately 20 to 25 seconds. Use vice grips to grab the screw head and remove the snap-off screw by turning it counterclockwise, repeating the procedure for the other snap-off screw. Remove the ECM locking mechanism, slide the ECM out from the metal anti-theft housing, and disconnect the harness connectors from the ECM. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring the metal anti-theft housing is reinstalled with new snap-off screws and the locking lug of the bracket is bent back. If the ECM was replaced, use a diagnostic scan tool to check the Diagnostic Trouble Code memory, erase if necessary, code the new ECM, adapt the throttle valve control module, adapt the kickdown point for vehicles with automatic transmission, and generate a readiness code.
