  The cylinder head(s) have the spark plugs and the equipment required to replace them usually consists of a spark plug socket to be attached to a ratchet, different extensions, and a feeler gauge to measure and adjust the gap in the spark plug. Although not a requirement, a torque wrench can be used to optimally tighten the plugs, and a normal ratchet is required to install the plug socket. In some cases, special extensions and universal joints might be needed to access some plugs, based on the model. Before installing the spark plugs, it would be a wise precaution to buy a new set of plugs, and fit them to the right gap, and change each plug separately, taking care to get the right kind to fit the particular engine. The engine should be allowed to completely cool before removal and in the process the new plugs may be checked with regard to defects and seals. The gap is confirmed with a suitable thickness gauge in between the electrodes such that it slides with minimal resistance and any cracks in the body of the plug should be recorded since it makes the plug unusable.
