  • Q: What steps are required for refitting a tie rod end and balljoint retaining nut on Audi A3?
    A:
    Refitting will involve a new balljoint retaining nut. Start with attaching the handbrake, lifting the front of the car using jack, and putting it on the axle stands and then removing the roadwheel concerned. In the event of the track rod end being reused, it should be marked in reference to the track rod to enable easy re-fitting. Unscrew the locknut on the track rod end 1/4 turn, be careful not to lose the item as a reference point. Loose and unscrew the nut connecting the track rod end balljoint and the wheel bearing housing and then loosen the balljoint tapered shank with a universal balljoint separator, gripping the shank with an Allen key and loosening the nut. Record the number of full turns that it takes to remove the track rod end of the track rod. Clean balljoint and threads, renew balljoint (when movement is sloppy, too stiff, worn out or damaged), check stud taper and threads, and replace whole assembly of balljoint and threads in case gaiter is damaged. In refitting, screw the track rod end into the track rod using the number of turns required in removing it, and positioning it within a quarter of a turn of the locknut, and clamp the locknut. Install the balljoint shank back to the steering arm on the wheel bearing housing and install a new retaining nut and screw it into the required torque with an Allen key, in case of necessity. Install the roadwheel again, bring the car down to the ground and tighten the car roadwheel bolts to the required torque. Lastly, adjust the front wheel toe position (when necessary).
