- Q: What precautions should be observed before working on the Fuel Level Sensor and Fuel Pump components for Petrol engines on Audi A3?A:Note the precautions that have to be observed before working on any component in the fuel system. The fuel lift pump and gauge sender unit are assembled as one unit, they are fitted on the top of the fuel tank and the access is under the cushion on the rear seat in the floor panel. To eliminate the unit, make sure that the car is parked on a flat surface, pull off the battery negative lead, and place it away off the terminal. Take out the back seat cushion and take up the section of the carpet on the floor panel. Unclip and detach the connector block of wiring, then pry up the cover to un-connect the wiring to the lift pump/gauge sender unit. Pad the space about the supplying and returning hoses of fuel with rags to save any spilting fuel and then release the hose clips and disconnect them, labeling the hoses so that they can be refitted correctly. Record the placement of the alignment marks, unscrew and carefully take off the securing ring with an appropriate tool and remove the lift pump/gauge sender unit, letting out the excess fuel.
