The poly-vee drive belt drives the alternator and, where fitted, the air conditioning compressor, with the drive belt tension adjusted automatically by a spring-tensioned idler on all engines. To renew the drive belt, first remove the engine top cover. For better access, apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands before removing the right-hand front roadwheel and the access panel from the inner wheel arch. If reusing the drive belt, mark it for clockwise direction to ensure correct refitting. On all 2.0 litre and 1.6 litre SOHC engines, use a spanner on the lug provided to turn the tensioner clockwise and lock it in the released position with a drill. For 1.6 litre DOHC engines, turn the tensioner central bolt anti-clockwise to release the tension, then insert a suitable drill bit or metal rod to hold the tensioner. Note the routing of the drive belt, then remove it from the crankshaft pulley, alternator pulley, and air conditioning compressor pulley. Locate the new drive belt on the pulleys, release the tensioner, and ensure the belt is correctly positioned in the multigrooves. Finally, refit the access panel and roadwheel, lower the vehicle to the ground, and replace the engine top cover.
